Headed to Vegas in a few weeks for a work convention. Any recommendations for places to eat?

    Nobu is excellent, but, I had a meal I will never forget at Kumi:


    The sushi was on par with stuff I've had at Morimoto in Maui and New York.

    I on the other didn't have the best meal at Nobu. I was thoroughly disappointed. am influenced by his creativity. I thought it was good but not constituting the price. Service was ok at best. Drinks are outrageous.

     

    Also ate at Gordon Ramsay's. Very good meal. Service was above and beyond. The little touches they provide are elegant. Not cheap, but worth it, unlike my experience at Nobu.

    Burger Br was good too.

     

    For an after show or after meal dessert, hit up the Aria or Caesars for Jean Phillipe Patisserie. Unbelievable.

    Sad to hear about your experience at Nobu.  The last time I ate there was years ago when it was relatively new in the Hard Rock.  A couple of the Allman Brothers were at a big table next to us and even Nobu himself was there.  I'm sure servers and cooks were on their A-game since the proprietor was present.  

    Like I said though, I liked Kumi better. I ate there this last April.

    What kindof place do you WANT to eat at & maybe we can narrow down some recommendations for you?  You really can find just about everything in Vegas.

    Some of my favorite places are:

     KOI (Sushi in the Planet Hollywood hotel)

    STK (Modern SteakHouse in the Cosmopolitan)

    Japonais (Modern Japanese in the Mirage)

    Julian Serrano Tapas (Spanish tapas & paella joint at the Aria hotel)

    Steak- Carnevino Seafood- Estiatorio miles (Cosmo) Bartolotta (Wynn) Italian- scarpetta Other fun spots Spago, Rao's, Joes stone crabs, many others. Plenty of lower end places that are great too

    craftsteak in the MGM has prime flat iron and hanger among its other steaks.  Best hanger steak I've had anywhere, reasonably priced too for a top end steakhouse.  you can check the menu online, search mgm grand...restaurants......

    We spent a year there one week....my first and last trip to LV.  Not a fan.  Was there to attend a work conference.  The highlight of our trip was exploring the restaurants.  Some of our favorites were Mesa Grill (Bobby Flay's place) in Caesar's Palace, and Rao's, which I think is in Caesar's also.  We ate at Mesa Grill 2 or 3 times that week.

    I am not afraid of a hole in the wall burger joint either. Just looking for some insight from the BGE brain trust into the Vegas culinary world.

    Stacked in the Mirage is amazing. Peppermill is an old old restaurant on the strip that us a must. Cheap food and tons of it. Also straight 70s Las Vegas interior. A must see. Tacos del toro? I think that's it on the strip is ridiculous good tacos.

    The wicked spoon buffet at Cosmopolitan is a great buffet if you are into that.  

    Also are you looking for stuff on the Strip?  Downtown? Sumerland?  there is great food all over the place, just depends on budget, style and location.  We go about once a month (its the big city for us) so I know quite a few places but we stay away from the big casinos for the most part.

    I agree.  The best steak i've ever had was the flat iron and hanger steak I had at craft.  However, it was a Kobe taster menu.  If you're a Top Chef fan, craftsteak is owned by Tom Colicchio.

    Some of my favorite spots in Vegas are:

    Julian Serrano at Aria - love the huevos estrellados 
    craftsteak at MGM - Steaks are great, but that monkey bread yo
    Secret Pizza at Cosmopolitan - Great pizza and open till 5am
    Mr. Lucky's @ Hard Rock - off menu 777 special.  Steak and shrimp for $7.77.  Good for the price!
    Mesa Grill (Bobby Flay's spot) - Mesa Burger and Chipotle Glazed Rib-Eye
    Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar's Palace - If it's your thing, this is the one to go to

    Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....

    If you like checking out local faves, there's a great Mexican place off strip called Lindo Michoacán. There may be multiple locations, but the one we go to is at 2655 E. Desert Inn Rd. If you call (702-735-6828), they will sometimes pick you up at the hotel and drive you back depending on where you're staying. Amazingly nice folks, great service and food. They're very happy to go off menu.

    After many many trips to Vegas over about 15 years the only restaurant I always go back to is off strip.

    If you like Thai food, try the Lotus of Siam.  Without doubt the best Thai I have had in the US!

    Vegas has it all. Don't be afraid to venture off strip as that is where I have had many of my best meals. Food/Wine are much cheaper , but cab fare is expensive -- but when I figure how overpriced the strip is it is basically a wash dollar wise.

    +1 on Lotus of Siam. I go twice a year, but be sure to order off the Northern menu. Check out the vegas board on www.chowhound.com for what to order (as it is basically a Lotus love page) and let your server order for you.

    +1 on Lindo Michoacán

    Raku is an awesome off strip Japanese spot.

    I've had several good meals at DOGC in the Cosmopolitan.

    +1 on Craftsteak

    +1 on Julian Serrano at Aria

    +1 Mesa Grill

    Le Cirque in the Bellagio, hands down the best combination of high end French food and amazing service I've ever had. I'll never forget that meal

    Bouchon in the Venetian great French bistro fare (and awesome breakfast/brunch)

    Wolfgang Puck has several places around town. I admire him for the level of consistency he maintains throughout his empire. Never going to be blown away, but I know the food/booze/service is going to be good every time.

    Try the offmenu Steak and eggs at Ellis Island.   Just a few dollars and oh so good!  As a bonus they microbrew their own beer.  So a fresh drawn draft with the steak and eggs offmenu special is the way to go!
    Oh and single deck Blackjack......yep...it's true!

    The buffet at the Bellagio is spectacular.  I'm not really a buffet guy because the food usually tastes mass produced and like it sat for several hours.  Not here, very high quality and cycled out quickly.

    Another +1 on Secret Pizza at the Cosmo.  Good luck finding it.

    Off strip, stop at any of the Capriotti's for a sandwich.  Capastrami, The Bobby, Italian, Philly, etc.....all very good.

    Years ago we ended up in this Japanese place off strip.  It was in an upstairs strip mall and had all the pictures on the wall of the food.  First I thought I was going to get thrown out b/c I didn't take my shoes off when we got into the sunken table.  Then we pointed to about 15-20 things on the wall.  $50 got us a table full of food--some good, some bad.  It was awesome.


    Past that, make sure you check out the Pinball Hall of Fame east of the strip on Tropicana.  I always hit the car museum at the Imperial (called something else now.)  Atomic Testing Museum and Mob Museum are also cool.  The road trip down to Hoover Dam is worth every penny.....take the extended tour.

    +1 = 2 of us going in December for our old people honeymoon. A week in Vegas, then driving to the coast for a week in San Diego, flying back from Vegas. (It was cheaper than dropping the car in San Diego, a LOT cheaper)

    We've been looking at restaurants, and I just know I'm going to drop 3 bills on dinner at Ramsay's place. 

    We like elegant dining, but that's going to be once or twice - beyond that I'll be looking for where the locals eat for less than $20 a plate. 

    Thanks for posting this, I'm going to keep an eye on it.  Great idea to use the brain trust here.
