Pepper Mills or Grinder?

My pepper mill went down a while back and I have been buying coarse pepper in the plastic container (yeah, I know, but I do buy a good quality). Just cannot beat a fresh cracked pepper though.

Thought about just using my blade grinder and grind the peppercorns and have in a dish w/ cover. A little in between right now.

What do you use?

I have an old Peugot, 30+ years. Its not adjustable, but I see that some newer ones are. Seems to me the claimed durability is genuine.

Also, consider getting a stone mortar and pestle. Works on all spices w. some effort.

I've been using the Unicorn Magnum Plus. It puts out a good amount of pepper per twist and grinds pretty evenly. Worth checking out.

I too have an old 30 + year old Peugot. It's still going strong. Bought another Peugot for the cottage, love them.

I tell yea, the ones I have had, with a big cook, will wear you out! I want and need one that really outputs a lot with a twist. I don't want carpel tunnel.

I also use a Turkish coffee grinder to grind my pepper. It looks something like this:

For everyday stuff I just use a pepper grinder...I buy pepper with a built in grinder from Costco or BJs. For big jobs (brisket or pepper stout beef) I use a cheap coffee grinder. The coffee grinder works great.

That's a nice peppermill. Paid around that price $35, for the larger size. Also picked up the Minimill for camping. Both are great.

+1 for the Unicorn Magnum! I love mine and I'm sure it will out live me! It's a tough bird!

I love my battery powered grinder. Will never manually twist one again. For large amounts sometimes I will use the vitamix or coffee grinder but very rarely.

This is the answer. Watch the sales, Mr. Coffee grinder sells for <$15, will grind a couple of tablespoons of pepper corns in no time. Finish can be anything from just cracked to dust depending on how long you spin it. For table or small amounts, a good adjustable twist pepper mill does the trick.

Further advantage is the coffee grinder can do any other spices or herbs you might need reduced.

I have a Cole & Mason that is Cook's Illustrated's new favorite; the price jumped immediately and I gave up waiting for it to come down. Very easily adjustable and gives you a lot per turn (I think I have 6 or so peppermills).

For making a large amount of rub, I use a Krups coffee grinder (<$20, and also a CI favorite).

Always tempted to assemble a "Black & Decker" pepper grinder like Alton Brown uses, but I haven't yet... someday.

Thanks for all the input, and I think I may just use my old blade grinder that I have to process my peppercorns instead of a grinder. That way I can grind and place in my container on the counter along with my salt. Though I do like the looks of the Unicorn Magnum (sounds freaky).
