I've spent a lot of time in the third world (Haiti). The smell of charcoal-making is really something one comes to associate.

These are mud huts that they load with wood, set on fire and then seal off except for a very small opening and burn down to charcoal......this is used for their everyday cooking

I did not bring back charcoal but I have brought back several things regarding cooking including this charcoal cooker....I use this when I am cooking a couple of steaks or pork chops....works great...cost me less than $5.00

We traveled there for 10 years, spending two months in Thailand then back to USA for two months then back to Thailand for two months We were spending six months of the year in Thailand traveling this way. We learned a lot more about Thailand than someone going there for a two to four week vacation. The people are great, food is delicious, safe country (we could walk around and not feel threatened) and prices are cheap

In South America it's usually the other way around.......they stack all the wood up into a pile, then build the kiln around it. Then after the cooking and the cooling, they just knock it down and collect the charcoal.
