The wooden handle on my Egg appears to be sufficiently stained but I'm concerned about it's not having been varnished to help protect it from the elements. I just got my egg and plan to buy a cover soon but still there will be the random rain or snow that occurs while in use … has anyone tried putting varnish (or something else) on their handle to protect it beyond whatever was done at the factory? Or would that be a bad idea due to the handle's exposure to high heat? Just wondering,

Not at all. Hit it with spar varnish. The first pic shows one made by Lawn Ranger (he did 5 for me) going on. The second is showing you can't hurt it. I was just learning it so much better to light a Mini with a Mapp Torch than a full size weed burner like I use for the Larges. This was several years age and works just fine, see no reason to repair.

I no longer cover mine either. They are on a covered porch and not in the rain or direct sunlight.

A little fancy work with some Type 1 paracord did the trick for me.

mine are not. 9 years and counting outside completely uncovered for my first (4 years in WI winter and now 5 in the TX summers). Still looks awesome. Went through 3 table rebuilds and a table fire and the eggs still look great. Threw my cover away first month I had it.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX -
Mine is not (and will not) be under any sort of awning or overhang. But if the egg looks good w/out a cover then I can spend that $$ on more lump coal !!!I might think about a custom handle AFTER I've spent the $$ on a custom table for my large Egg.Thanks to all.Happy Smoking!H.P.

MDSH just bought me an umbrella for over the table. My gloves, starters and wood chips are being stored in a bin in the garage. I'm a happy girl. Glad to know that the weather won't hurt the egg and when the table rots then maybe I can get the outdoor kitchen. ;;)Every day is a bonus day and every meal is a banquet in Winter Springs, Fl !

The egg doesn't need a cover - but often the cook does. The reason I have a BBQ shed is to stay dry during our four month monsoon winter here in the PNW.Covers provide a place to capture moisture and give critters (4/6/8 legged) a place to hide.Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!
