dome temp on turkey cook

I am 10 minutes into my turkey cook, and the dome is reading only 250 or so. Could the open dome plus the cold turkey make the reading read 100 degrees below actual dome temp? I am tempted to open the lower vent some. Please advise, quickly![p]Happy thanksgiving and God's blessings to all.

    chattanooga choo choo,
Hmm. just thinkin, but double check that your dome probe is not too close to the meat. Was your fire going for a while? If you have an extra polder, set it up so you can get another reading somewhere on the same level as the turkey. Did you have a solid temp before you put the bird on? How long was your fire going?

Should also mention....relax, get some more air to the fire and it'll slowly come up. Give it some time as you don't want to end up with a raging fire.
    Happy cookin!

    chattanooga choo choo,
I've got my vent open about 3/4 inch right now and the daisy wheel full open and am holding about 360.

  • Nature Boy,[p]I had fire stabilized for 45 minutes, but it took a couple of minutes to set up placesetter and such for turkey cook. I will see if polder can serve me as you suggested. Thanks!
  • chattanooga choo choo,[p]Do you have a large amount of ashes in the bottom of your egg??? This might change the airflow causing you to have to leave the vent in more open position to yield the same temps??
Take a deep breath and trust the egg. I bet shortly the temps will read more closely to what you expected. [p]EGG POWER!!!!!!!!!!![p]Hank

    chattanooga choo choo,
Yeah, if you put a cold platsetter in, and a big ol' cold bird, then you need a little more fire. Open her up a bit and it'll start comin up. Don't forget to let the people makin the side dishes know you are getting a slow start!!
    Have fun

chattanooga choo choo,[p]Same here. Right now dome temp reading about 225 but feels hotter when I open the lid and the coals are burning pretty hot. I pulled out the thermometer a bit to get it away from the turkey. I've had this happen a lot when I don't have good airflow because of roasting pans, drip pans, etc. Gonna hang a polder in there somewhere and see what is REALLY going on![p]mShark
  • chattanooga choo choo, Just remember, If you're looking, you ain't cooking!!

  • Nature Boy,[p]I opened bottom vent some, paid my 15-year old son $20 to watch the temp, and went to pick up my fried turkey from a local restaurant (hedged my bets, and my wife begged me not to fry one at home). I got home and temp was threatening to hit 400. My son said it had been 340 and suddenly shot up. But it was not high long enough to mess up my cook, I believe.
Thanks to all for your input.

  • chattanooga choo choo,
I am smoking a turkey for the first time, a 13 pounder. My wife just put a roast in the oven, I guess she is hedging her bets!

  • chattanooga choo choo,[p]I would have watched it for only $15.[p]Gwen
