What size should I get?

I am getting ready to purchase my first egg and am having a hard time picking a size. There are four people in our family and we do minimal entertaining of guests. I am leaning towards a medium, but was hoping that some of you could share some advice. I would want to be able to cook 4-6 steaks and a 10-15 pound turkey. I have looked at all of the dimension information on the BGE site, but want to hear from some people that use them all of the time.[p]Thanks

    Ryan Marshall,
Depending on what you are planning on cooking. But get a large, then wait for a small later on.
I bought 2 larges right off the bat and wish I would have bought a large and small.[p]HTH[p]Mike

For your first egg get the large. Later if you want another egg the small works great and can be transported easier that the large. I started with the large and then purchased the small and it's a great combination. A year later I couldn't control myself and purchased a second large making three total. [p]You won't regret it.

    Ryan Marshall,
Large. Medium would get crowded real quick. As mentioned a small is a great second grill. You'll love cooking PP on the large and whilst waiting and smelling the smells doing burgers or something quick on the small for lunch.

    Ryan Marshall,
Sort of a similiar profile here, but on a daily basis only one half of that you posted! OTOH being just two of us now and LOVING the results from the BGE then over a 5 year period we have gone/added to the BGE family with:
    Large, then
    Small, then
    Medium, then
    Mini...
Trust me - it gets in your blood!

    SearJB,
I really want one of those non-round ceramics but if I stay all Green I'm inclined to go for the stacked doll appearance and get a medium and mini.....maybe and extra large too.....definite conversation starter when people come over. They already ask "what is that thing" now.

Just in time for the holidays! I'm very happy with my large and the 18 1/2" grid to cook a turkey on- with some elbow room to spare.
Have fun and join the club.

    Ryan Marshall,
If you can afford it get the large. I have a large and a medium. Love them both. Started out with a large. Kept the large just outside of my garage door. Got the medium about a year after just so I would have an Egg right outside my kitchen door.
Those thing tend to grow on you.

    Ryan Marshall,
I have to cast my vote with the crowd that suggets a Large for your first egg. Like many others, I started with a large and added the small about a year later. RRP is right about this whole egg thing getting in your blood. One is never enough.

Morning Ryan Marshall:[p]Our first egg was a medium (that was all we could afford at the time, January 2002) and that worked well for our family (me, the wife and our 20-something son). Even the times we entertained for more that that I found ways to make it work. However, I realized if I wanted to do more than one item at a time or at different temps I needed a second, so we added a large in March 2005. Since then we have now also added a mini (by way of winning a raffle for one).[p]All that being said, if I had to do it all over again I would start with a large (assuming the wallet could handle it), realizing that the other sizes will follow.[p]Have a GREAT day!

dhuffjr, I take the Mini with me when I go to the Keys. I set it up outside our room on a picnic table. Last spring, I cranked it up one nite and waiting for it to come up to temp......one guy kept watching me, but kept his distance. He finally asked "When is that thing gonna take off?" ;)[p]mini1.jpg

  • Ryan Marshall,
I believe that a 15# Turkey deserves a LARGE. We're a family of thre and our large often runs out of room when entertaining. I want to add an XL and another large or medium, but I did that my wife would have me committed or at least Baker Acted.

    Ryan Marshall,
Just me and the wife in our house and sometimes I wish our large was a little bit bigger. Definitely go for the large, it also has the most accesories and it's easier to find parts to make your own accesories.[p]Cheers,

    Ryan Marshall,
i hate to say it, but you dunno what you are in for!
get the large, you'll use ity all the time, likely 3 times a week.[p]and it is the most flexible option. it may seem pricey, but that thing is gonna be the best chunk of ca$h you ever spent.

stike,[p]I agree... The medium is fine machine but I think you'll often end up using all the grill space on the large.[p]On top of the monetary investment you will get more in return than just a cooker.... you will make lifelong friends through this forum with countless suggestions and recipes to cook on the egg.

Ryan Marshall,[p]Large..get the large. If you get anything smaller, you'll be getting a second egg real soon, because you'll want the space.
  • Ryan Marshall,[p]I am only looking for one to cook 12 pieces of chicken... Is a medium big enough? ;-) Does it come with lessons on how to post and take pictures???

Scottie:[p]So , really, when you gonna purchase ceramic?[p]From what I hear bigger is better as long as it is not too big . . . Consider a Large . . . You will grow into it![p]As for the BGE cooking and picture posting lessons, pay the extra cost for onsite service. (smilie thingie)

Ryan Marshall, I'm a single guy here in Alaska and asked the same question about 3 months ago. I got the same answers as you.....Get a large. Believe it or not but they are right. I have loaded this thing up so much and wished I had another on hand for more. You may not have much company now but once you have an Egg you will be suprised how many friends you have that you didn't know about. Happy Egging!!! Mik
