Help - Bailing Wire (Replacing OEM Lump Grate on XL)

edited February 2014 in EggHead Forum

I am and have been unimpressed with my XLBGE airflow, so I bought 2 weber charcoal grates that I want to tie together with bainling wire (as I have found throughout the forum as a solution).  However, I can't find any locally (lowes, HD, ACE) and i can only find galvanized bailing wire online.  I read here in the forum that you shouldn't use galvanized anything in the egg because of possible contaminated offgas, but I may be wrong about that.

Can I get some help/assistance with this issue?

Thanks!!!

    Here is what I use:
    http://www.homedepot.com/p/Weyerhaeuser-400-ft-16-5-Gauge-Rebar-Tie-Wire-05337/202094311

I use it for almost everything that needs wired up.  Never had a problem with it in the old Brinkman offset, but have not used it in the egg for anything.

You should be able to find this right next to the rebar.  Just ask at HD.

You think you could find that post? I'm not creative or handy enough to do that on my own!

I only use one grate.  If I used two, I would just tack weld it in a few places.......or use some stainless safety wire to hold them together.

Found it, it's a thread in the 'other' forum. Two configurations, Uncle Phil's has photos; make sure you read up on Chef Jacques Strappe's idea too (no photo). Neither of them requires welding. Here's the link:

btw, I'd just use galvanised stuff and wouldn't worry about spending extra time/expense hunting down stainless steel nuts/bolts, the stainless vs. galvanised debate has been beaten to death over the years.

Probably better than tiewire anyway. Plus you don't have 500' leftover, although, there"s always a need for tiewire & duct tape.... ;)

I haven't kicked the tires on it yet.  I'm currently plotting a brisket cook next weekend, or pizzas on Sunday.  I'll let y'all know when I do and how I like it.  I sure hope I like it cuz I pitched the OEM already!

To update: Just got done eating pizza from the egg, and ya, it was delicious.  However I noticed with the OEM charcoal grate i would have to rotate the pizza.  With the new grate I didn't have to.  Also, I got it up to 500 degrees in about 25-30 minutes, with the OEM it would take 45 min to an hour (I only use 1 starter cube).

So, without any hesitation I can recommend 100% to throw out that piece of **** OEM grate.

@danv23‌...Sounds like a great idea. Only issue I could think of is smaller lump falling through grate. But, it sure as hell fire will get max airflow. Better airflow=effiency in burn and should equate to higher temps quicker as you've proven. Great job!

I made this grate out of extruded steel for large BGE when the OEM grate cracked. No paint, no coating. It's cheap and does a good job. used the old grate as a pattern.
