Finally got MAP torch!!

Finally picked up a MAP torch today. I must say....WOW!! It is quick. In just 15 seconds or so you are lit. I was coming from a BGE electric starter and this is worlds better. I like the ability to light 2-3 different spots. I do however have a couple of questions....
1. When I lit the charcoal it sparked like crazy. I used Rockwood which typically doesn't spark when lighting. I will say that this was 100% used charcoal as it was leftover from low and slow this wk-end. Thought maybe that attributed to it.....
2. I notice in the instructions to the MAP it says after use take the torch off the bottle. Do you guys do this? Also, if I ever forgot to turn off the gas or turn off the torch would it actually hurt anything? Doesn't seem to leak gas when you aren't pulling trigger. Maybe it does...
Thanks guys!

Man, I leave mine outside with the gas on all winter. Sometimes it doesn't spark up but you can light it with a lighter and it will be fine.
Seriously though, it's a really good idea to either wear safety glasses or look away when lighting.

Any danger in leaving it out in summer. Easily 100 plus down here in Louisiana. It will usually be stored in cabinet under covered patio if that sounds safe to you guys.

1 - I use RO and it sparks too. I usually look away slightly, but really need safety glasses.2 - Like @little Steven, I leave mine hooked to my tank. The piezo lighter has already failed but I have a lighter I use anyway.3 - I try to always cut the valve off on the torch and bottle. Propane can leak out though very minimal.------------------------------

I find some charcoal sparks way more than others , but I always look away when using the torch. Also I leave mine next to the egg and probably never turn mine off The torch is greatest ! EnjoyToronto

A friend (and I use the term very loosely) got one in the eye. Pretty sure it stung some but the guy is sort of a **** anyway. He eventually recovered but still whines about it.

I doubt leaving the tank outside in the hot summer would run any risk. I leave mine for work along with many other service guys in our vans without any problems.

Yellow one is Mapp ( for Mini) and white is propane (for Large). The are setting outside all year and gets hot as hell here in the middle of Texas.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). What the hell kind of torch is that? I have this little handheld device and that is like a flame thrower!!tarheelmatt said:Here is a video I make lighting the Egg using RO.

See link below. For $29.99 you can have one too! Get the flint striker also. The igniter is crap.------------------------------

I use Royal Oak and the fresh lump I add to whatever is in the Egg sparks all over the place. I don't pour the lump from the bag because of all the charcoal dust that will fall out (TALK ABOUT SPARKS!)--I wear gloves and pull the lump out by hand. Any huge pieces go in a container for low and slow cooks.I have 5 feet of tubing to the torch, so I hold on about a foot behind the torch and stand way back, letting the torch and tubing drape over the gasket. I can guide where the torch should move. Works great.I followed directions and always screw down the canister cap and expel any gas from the line when I'm done. Eliminates any worry.Judy in San Diego

I like the spray and pray method...Just kidding. Precautions are needed when lighting like this.------------------------------

@tarheelmatt The torch I bought seemed to work ok. I was pretty impressed with it. Isn't this what most people are using? Or is lots if people using that "flame thrower" you have??
Also, how about that win over Dook last week. Go Heels!!XL Egg Owner Since Dec 2013 - Louisiana

I have noticed if you kind of bury the end of the torch in the lump a little it does not spark as bad.Jeff from Winston-Salem, NC - LBGE, MiniMax, Blackstone

@corey24 - Oh I think the one you have is just fine. I figured this one would work just fine so I got it.Those Dookies were crying all the way back to Durham... Long 8 miles back home I would assume. The Rams Club sent this out to all members. I captioned this like Jeff Capel thinking he is a direct result of spousal abuse from Coach Rat... "Oh man he is going to hit me... but I will tell them I fell down".------------------------------

@corey24 - No, I live about 50 mins away from CH. Something pretty neat is my mother who is 66 years old now, was a hell of a basketball player. She received female player of the year from her county/conference. The man who gave her the award was none other than "The Dean" Dean Smith!------------------------------

I'm glad I got the MAP too. It has a surgical rather than a carpet bomb approach to light lump. I use RO and it doesn't spark much if I light previously burned lump or shove the nozzle into the lump some. I keep everything hooked up but I do turn it off and turn the flame control knob down.Dave - Austin, TX

@Corey24, I have the same torch you do. Like it a lot. I am burning Frontier lump this winter and it sparks a good bit when I light it. I do not usually turn the valve off, but the trigger has an off position that I turn off. I store it in the basement between uses. I am pretty sure they put an odorizer in the gas like they do propane and natural gas. If it is leaking at all you will have a rotten garbage like smell.XLBGE, Small BGE, Homebrew and GuitarsRochester, NY
