Dutch over versus Crock pot?

Newb here eager to try Egret chili. Gathered all the ingredients today but I don't have a dutch oven. Any reason not to use the pot out of my large Crock Pot? Thanks in advance!

For what it is worth, I risked the pot of my crock pot in the egg about 2 months ago, and cooked chili in it. I I put it on the grid above the platesetter. Worked fine.
For x-mas, I got my dutch oven. Yay!--------------------------------------------------

Crock pot works for indirect, but is a pain inthe tuchus to clean the outside of it.

Thanks to all. I broke down and bought a Lodge. The afternoon plan is Egret Chili, meatball appetizers and a loaf of bread on the BGE. Fingers crossed!

Good call on getting a DO. Haven't used in the egg yet, but love being able to sauté and brown meats and veggies on the stove for chili, stew, or soups and cook in one pot - makes a huge difference in developing flavor. Best part if DO is scraping those browned bits off the bottom, you just can't get that from a crock pot. The only time we use our crock pot now is for a slow cook while we're off to work.

Hey Bob...it went OK. Decided the bread was overkill. Did it in the oven. Meatballs and chili both killer but my temperature control still needs work. It all took longer than it probably should have. Haven't gotten around to learning the picture post regimen. Too busy learning to use my egg! Did I mention that the meatballs and chili were killer?

5 qt Lodge Dutch Oven for $30 on Amazon right now.
Somehow I get these daily amazon "sale" emails. About a year ago, they had a 6qt Lodge enameled DO for $30. Had to be red - all of the other colors were 3x the cost, so I figured I needed 3 red ones.

I use an enamel DO. Wrap the outside with aluminum foil and cleanup is a breeze

I like the egg as much as the next guy, but to me it seems like a "wrong tool for the job" kind of thing for chili. I can go about my business and let this thing simmer along for hours. And I'm saving lump. In fact, right now I'm going to run to the store because I forgot the Rotel.

IMO, chili absorbs the smoke very well and adds another layer of flavor to chili. I like a crock pot as much as the next guy, but I'll take chili from the egg and the extra flavor.
