Eggin' in the cold, ( Like 5 below cold) should I worry about firing up a cold egg?
Hello,
I have tomorrow off and a rack of ribs and whole chicken in my fridge, so I'm thinking of bringing in the year right. However, my Egg is out on my deck in below zero temperatures for days. Is there an issue with firing up a cold egg? Will it stress the ceramic to have that high heat on the inside and that cold on the outside? I would think it would be ok, but it doesn't hurt to check first. I could drag it in the house for a few hours, then fire it up. But I hate moving the thing. Thanks! and Happy Egg Year to you all in 2014.

Won't be an issue. The only problem you may have is that the lid is frozen closed. If that's the case put an oil soaked paper towel in the bottom vent and light it up. Should defrost the lid.

No problem. Just fire it up as usual. The heating of ceramic will be slow and will not 'shock' it to cracking.
If on the other hand the egg was hot and you watered it down with ice water it would probably crack.Hood Stars, Wrist Crowns and Obsession Dobs! -
Excellent. Thanks! Good tip regarding the lid. I haven't checked that yet.Is it done yet? Is it done yet?

If you do drag it in the house make sure to drag it back outside before lighting it!You won't have any issues at all lighting it outside.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.____________________Aurora, Ontario, Canada

I would worry more about freezing your ManGrates off. Just had to get them in one more time in 2013.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.
