Where do you buy chips and or chunks of smoke wood?

I wanted to get a few different flavors of wood to induce some smoke to my meats when cooking. Obviously I want to get a great product at a great price. So where do you buy this? Online (Amazon, other vendors), Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc?

I have not bought any wood from here, but I just bought a bunch of charcoal. Thought I got a good deal. http://www.firecraft.com/Large and Small BGECentral, IL

Locally, Lowes and HD have several different types/bags of wood chips (apple, cherry, pecan etc). Casual Furniture World in Winston has the different types of chunks and chips as well but they are a little pricey. Curious to see the responses for online orders from the others on here.Michael ~ XL ~ Winston Salem, NC

Around these parts HEB chips and chunks are much cheaper than the Weber branded at Home Depot.
Gittin' there... -
I've been enjoying the flavor of oak on my beef and pork, so I just pull a piece out my wood pile and cut into chunks with my chop saw.Kamado Joe Big Joe, Classic & Junior

Fruitawoods.com has a combo pack that lets you get 3 or 4 types of wood for a little over 2 buck/lb. Free shipping.

Not to get technical, but according to chemistry alcohol is a solution...

Was looking at Lowe's, Home Depot, and Walmart the other day. They had the Weber brand for around $6.99. Was doing some looking on Amazon today and saw the Weber chunks too. Was wondering if there were other avenues to get wood. The Fruita Wood.com was pretty cool if I cooked more. It is just my wife and I that I cook for most times.

Also agree with fruita woods. I was on a road trip last year and wsas passing through Grand Junction, Colorado and ordered some wood for pickup. It was great wood - the best I have ever seen. When I need more I will order from them again. If you are ever in the area be sure to stop in and call ahead to tell him what you want.

http://www.hawgeyesbbq.com/ has a good selection and ships reasonably. There is a review on Naked Whiz of their product. Nice people and good service.A poor widows son.

What area of the country do you live?
-
I have never bought bagged chunks, though they sell them at Home Depot and my BGE dealer.I live near Rochester, NY. Every year a few trees come down in the neighborhood. Oak, Cherry, and Maple. I grab a few branches and cut them to size. Apple orchards trim their trees, i have picked up apple branches from farm stands at orchards. A neighbor just lost a big branch on a pear tree over the weekend. I will be picking up a few branches there. Golf courses trim the hell out of their oak trees - wood is often available for the asking. If I decide I want Pecan or Mesquite, I will have to buy it as they do not grow locally. I did buy some Hickory slabs from a sawmill last summer, and cut them up myself. - will have Hickory for years.Bottom line, if you have a saw, free smoking wood is not hard to get in many parts of the country.XLBGE, Small BGE, Homebrew and GuitarsRochester, NY

@thailandjohn - I am in Central NC. We have many hickory and oak around. Apple and pecan are tough to find but are around.------------------------------

I should've guessed by your Egghead name where you were from. I'm in California, San Francisco Bay area I have a great source to buy chips and chunks.... Sorry I cannot help you
-
The best local source for me is a Ace Hardware that sells Eggs. Cheapest smoking wood I've come across. Online I would agree with what has been said above.I raise my kids, cook and golf. When work gets in the way I'm pissed, I'm pissed off 48 weeks a year.Inbetween Iowa and Colorado, not close to anything remotely entertaining outside of football season.

I've found a brand called western available at a lot of the box stores it's been good to ke.... kudos on @bettysnephew on hawgeyes...that's where I got my egg...they are a pretty good dealer.Making the neighbors jealous in Pleasant Hill, Ia one cook at a time...

I make my own. I have apple and hickory ready to use. I have cherry, maple and pecan in the pipeline. I can't get the pictures to upload. I will put them in another post.

You guys that make your own have me jealous. I'm going to be on the lookout for some good candidate wood. Question for you, do you cut it into chunks before you dry it or after?They/Them

I really like Academy. I have been getting stuff there lately. They have huge bags of wood for a good deal. The pieces are large though, so you may want to cut them. I also use the B&B Lump. Home Depot and Lowes also has some small bags of wood. There is also an Ace Hardware that is pretty close by that has just started carrying BGE, and he has a good selection of wood and charcoals.Large BGE Decatur, AL

A nice abundance of information all. This is great info for me and hopefully of others for different places to get wood from. The fruitawoods.com avenue appears to be a great deal. Also, Amazon has really good deals on the Weber bags.

I pick mine up from Ace Hardware. Fortunately I have in-laws with pecan and peach orchards so I've got an endless supply of those two.

Another vote for Ace Hardware. My local Ace has as good a selection of anyone.

I buy the Western name brand, usually at Academy. They have the most different kinds and it's cheaper.
