Stoker WiFi... Need Help
Comments

I have a cyberQ so i assume they are similar...Without knowing more about your network its probably a setting on your router. At home you likely have an internal ip address...away from home you will need to use the ip address your Internet provider gives you...The router needs a rule that directs the traffic to the internal address when you access it from outside... With some more detail I might be able to tell you more...Making the neighbors jealous in Pleasant Hill, Ia one cook at a time...

Agree with Mike. You need to forward a port on your router to your Stoker's internal IP. Look in your router's manual for "port forwarding" for where and how to do it. Now, you will need to determine the iP for your Stoker. I assign a specific IP to mine so I never need to change the rule on my router as the Stoker's IP doesn't change. This isn't necessary but it is nice. You can determine your Stoker's IP by either looking at DHCP clients on your router or just pull it from the Stoker via the menus. Last, you can find your routers IP assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) by looking on your router's page listed as a WAN IP. This is the address exposed to the web. Once all set, you use this IP in your browsers address bar, it connects to your router and then your router will forward that connection to your Stoker. Sounds more complicated than it really is....just need to play around in the menus of your router and stoker to get it configured properly. Hope this helps. We did all of these, but it still doesn't work outside of the wifi. I appreciate your thoughts on the problem. I may have to call the company next week and see what they have to say.

Make sure you are forwarding port 80 to the stoker IP. In the address bar be sure and have the index.html on the end. So http://IP addy/index.html. I assume you are using dhcp so the stoker IP can change so after rebooting your router I would verify the IP you are forwarding to = your stoker. This used to happen to me before I reserved an IP for my stoker. You may need to call you router's tech support to troubleshoot. I'm sure it is something simple.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

Thanks 4Runner. We hadn't tried adding the /index.html but it still didn't work. We are utilizing DHCP and my router allows me to reserve certain IP addresses so we did that before setting up the port forwarding. We checked the external IP by googling "IP" and use that IP address to try to access the Stoker. As long as we are on the local wifi, everything works. We can access the Stokers web interface just fine using the internal IP so we are reluctant to blame the Stoker's software.
We believe the router is set up correctly...and since the Stoker works just fine over the local wifi, we think it is set up right. Is it possible that the ISP is interfering in some way? Any other ideas?

Maybe so. What kind of modem and router do you have?Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

@4Runner The modem is a Westell 2100 and the router is a Netgear N900 WNDR 4500.
-
@trout1, we can get this going...probablyWhat IP are you using when you are off of the wifi? You need to use your external IP.Another thing I am thinking...you need to make sure that your Westell modem is in bridging mode. What this means is that the Netgear router will get the External IP, not the Westell. Usually you want your router to get the external IP because it can do much more with it than your modem. You can check this by logging into your router and seeing what the WAN IP is. If it doesn't match what you see when you go to "whatismyip.com", then your modem is probably getting the external ip, not the router.Just a thought.
-
A good way to test this is to use your phone and disable your wifi connection on your phone so you are not connected to your home network.

However, since you have a router and I'm assuming that is proving your wifi in your house, your modem must be in bridge mode already.Calling the ISP is a great idea. Although, they might give you crap about putting the modem in bridging mode, but there is probably docs online that will tell you how to do this. This is a few years old, but might be relevant:
-
That is interesting. I only seen a double NAT error message if bridge mode is needed but not setup. So, you are saying you didn't have any errors and you still needed to go with bridge mode? Anyway, the key is that the modem should be getting you on the internet and the router is doing all the routing since that is where the port forwarding is taken place. Maybe his westell is performing some routing functions too? That where I thought you would see an error though. The ISP should be willing to help. Also, found this article. http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/110/~/scenarios-when-you-need-to-configure-your-modem-in-bridge-modeJoe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I hope he comes back and reports!

Thank you, everyone for all of this information. My son is going to look into all of this for me when he has time. I will keep you informed on what happens.

Just curious, which IPhone/IPad app you are trying to use?Large BGE, MiniMAX BGE, 2 Mini BGE's, R&V Fryer, 36" Blackstone Griddle, Camp Chef Dual Burner 40K BTU StoveBGE ChimineaProsper, TX

@Hotch Iphone 5 and IPad 4th gen with retina screen

Go to Rock's and look at all of the Iphone/Ipad apps. These may help. I have used Stoker in the past. It has a few annoying alarms.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but has the Stoker been given a reserved IP address (if you're running DHCP) so that every time its turned on it has the same IP so the port forwarding is sending the http request to the correct place?Near San Francisco in California

Update on not being able to check on Stoker outside of WiFi: First I want to thank everyone for your suggestions. You got my son and I on the right tract. We had to get the modem in bridged mode. I waited until my son came back for a visit from TN to help me. It is working great. Thanks again.
