Getting a BGE BBQ Guru to control the temp on two eggs at once.

I may be picking up a second BGE off craiglist and was wondering if anyone has figure out a way to get the BGE BBQ guru to control to eggs at once.  I have this eggcessory and it doesn't seem like you can add on a double control feature:

I would want both eggs to be set at the same temp so I'm not looking for independent control.  Perhaps just some wire splitters or something along that line that can control both eggs.

Thanks,

MP

  • You could possibly use a splitter, and get a second fan. You would need to compensate for the loss of voltage going to each fan due to splitting the power, but I guarantee I could make it work fairly easy. If you are good with electronics you can figure it out. The MFG will say no, not to try, or no, you cannot do it. I say, I know I can, just have to decide if it is worth it.

I don't see how you could pull that one off.  I bought a second egg, and a 2nd guru.

I don't see any way you could do it.  It only has one pit temp input and one fan output.  Even if you used a splitter there is no way you could control what fan needed to be turned on causing your pit temps to be all over the place.  Do what I did and sell your Guru, you can use the same probes and fan on a Cyber-Q.  Just buy a couple more probes and another fan and your all set.

I think the stoker brand is capable of multi eggs/pits

Stoker can control multiple pits and you can get adapters to use other probes. Not sure if you could adapt DigiQ probes/blower or not. Right now I'm leaning toward the Stoker over the CyberQ when the time comes.

Stoker uses type K probes with an inline chip and CyberQ uses type T probes with no chip.  The thermocouples are not compatible.  You have to stay with one system and probes.

That makes sense, the adapters available for the Stoker are for the generic type K probes that don't have a chip.

Will that splitter work for my BGE DigiQ?

@Charlesmaneri  The Cyber-Q II will control two pits.  The newest Cyber-Q wifi will only control one.

    Hi Mud Pig,

That would not work.  That's not actually a splitter, it is an adapter to connect a standard thermocouple connector to the Stoker.  A thermocouple has two wires and that connector simply takes the two signals to the headphone style connector used for the stoker.

Like @Bowhunr said you are not going to be able to do this with splitters anyway.  You need two independent sets of control inputs (pit temp) and control output (fan).  Even if you want to maintain the same temperature it is still two independent control loops.   It is possible to wire thermocouples together in parallel but that just gives you the average temperature.  So, you could do this and get the average temp of both eggs, then you could wire up two fans to the output. The input temp on the controller would read the average temp and the fans will go on/off simultaneously.  Basically if you set the controller target to 250 degrees, one egg might be 300 degrees actual temp and the other 200 degrees actual.  The controller would read 250 on the input and think everything was hunky dory.

I think you will need either a second controller, or one that is designed for multiple cookers.
