creating a controlled flashback on purpose

This lighting tip is not for the timid, but it has worked for me many times when needed. The other night it was pouring down rain when I opened my egg to start the fire. I only had two Rutland starter blocks but I was able to get them lit. As I stood there with the dome wide open the rain was soaking my lump and was running out the bottom vent! I have a small hand operated blower and was cranking it like crazy and finally shut the dome and watched it finally come up to a wimpy 190°. I still had to put my now wet PS in and get it all up to 350° dome. I opened the dome again and cranked and cranked the blower and quickly put the PS in legs up. Eventually the dome had crept to 220 and stalled! I then did what I call an induced flash back. I put the rain cap on the dome and with mittens on I quickly raised the dome. With the PS in place the flash back spreads sideways as opposed to straight up, but it still is scary! I then closed it, removed the rain cap and waited another minute and repeated the process, but then opening and closing it rapidly. That creates quite the suction and repeated “controlled” flashbacks. Soon I was cruising at 350° and the rain was still pouring down!

    LOL Don't know about the brave part but you nailed the other! Actually I use 14" Orka mittens when I summon the flashback god for help!

    LOL - it does go clear to my elbow and I have a pair of them so I can really go deep into my egg when need be. Nice thing is they clean up real easily in the dishwasher when they get dirty and greasy!

    Leaf lower in the bottom vent will take you to wherever you wanna go in nothing flat.

    Assume you use the BGE 61 blower.....

    Didn't know that Stihl and BGE had an arrangement did you?

    I had misstated them yesterday as being 14" they are actually 17" as you can see here.

    You are welcome...you certainly can go in harms way with these. The only drawback is they do not slip on easily in the winter when you have on heavy coat sleeves.

    Hey RRP, while I've got your attention for a sec. I have a quick OT question. What would you recommend for me to cook tonight? As you might know I'm fairly new to egging and so far I've done a pork butt, steaks, pizza, burgers, and chicken breasts. All the normal meats but I'm looking to get out of my comfort zone a little bit and maybe try something I haven't. Thanks bud.
