Slowly trying to learn some different single malts. This one is very mild; almost no smokiness or peat.MSV Chill Spot

Nothing as in no egging? Or in no drinking? I think drinking is mandatory taking the family anywhere for 4 days!YEMTrey said:Nothing this weekend :(

Hapster - the fine oak 10 is a great highland single malt, in fact, I like it better than the fine oak 15. Have you migrated over to islay's yet?Ajax, ON Canada(XL BGE, MED BGE, La Caja China #2, and the wife's Napoleon gasser)

I tried some Langavulin 16 a few weeks ago and really liked it. Also have some Talisker 10 that I enjoyed.bweekes said:Hapster - the fine oak 10 is a great highland single malt, in fact, I like it better than the fine oak 15. Have you migrated over to islay's yet?

@hapster-Curious as I have been fortunate (at least my liver:)), when first introduced to scotch I couldn't afford the malts I enjoyed and subsequently found bourbon. And there's no looking back. So, since you and @henapple work both sides of the whisky equation how do you find the differences? Should you choose to pass I understand as it could start a $hitstorm here >-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period.

Hap - know this is an English site, but if you see some Aberlour, try it. The 12 year Highland is fantastic, with a Cuban of course....Delta B.C. - Whiskey and steak, because no good story ever started with someone having a salad!

Afford has got nothing to do with it ) I probably shouldn't be buying any of my vices...lousubcap said:@hapster-Curious as I have been fortunate (at least my liver:)), when first introduced to scotch I couldn't afford the malts I enjoyed and subsequently found bourbon. Thank God for separate accounts. Ha!!!
As for single malts vs bourbons... So far I find that I enjoy the bourbon on the rocks and the single malt with a few stones. I tend to sip and drink the single malt at a much slower pace than the bourbons. That said; I think the bourbon goes with the smoked and grilled food off the egg a little better than the scotch. The peaty smokiness is different than bbq smokiness and it doesn't seem to complement it as much as the bourbon does.
Hope that doesn't start any sh@tstorms on here; but they're my thoughts so far as I sip the third single malt in my very young scotch career.MSV Chill Spot

@hapster-Full props and marks for the summary. Thanks for the assessment, especially on a Friday night. I can relate to your comments even after many years of "all bourbon and no scotch" evenings. That said, I have accumulated enough laps of the sun to just ride the "bourbon train". Somehow in my youth cheap bourbon won over cheap scotch and thus the preference.

Just to bring this back to egging for a moment...
Thinking of frying up some of the pulled pork and topping it with fried eggs in the morning. Maybe grab some wings for later tomorrow or dinner... Maybe some ABTs as well.
Sorry for the interruption. You may resume your imbibing... )MSV Chill Spot

Done it before. Fry the pulled pork in a little butter till it's crispy and them top it some fresh tomatoes and the eggs. If no good tomatoes, probably just go with some thick sliced onions.DMW said:That sounds like a great breakfast cook.

Drinking is egging!
For 10 yo, try Laphroaig. Ardberg is probably the most peaty I've had recently. Loved a couple of the Islay Distiller's Editions from last year.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -
If you're drinking both Macallan Fine and Lagavulin , there isn't going to be a style you don't enjoy.. Very different scotches. My favorite is the Talisker, which you've already tried. Start experimenting with the port and other casket scotches to get yet another level out of your drink. I'm off to have a cigar. Sorry, no selfie. EDIT -- shoot.. I may be thinking of Laphroaig.Large BGE and Medium BGE

Of the 3 so far that I've tried, Talisker is right in the middle. The Macallan this evening is a much lighter taste than the Lagavulin and the Talisker. Probably leaning towards the Talisker at this point. Of course; there are many others to try yetMaskedMarvel said:If you're drinking both Macallan Fine and Lagavulin , there isn't going to be a style you don't enjoy.. Very different scotches.
