Michigan Lump Charcoal

butertbutert Posts: 202
I'm looking for some good lump charcoal in Michigan. I've used the BGE lump and like it but it is kind of expensive. I've also tried the GFS brand and found that to burn quickly.

  • BGE brand and GFS are identical products....both Royal Oak.

Ok, I did not know that. Just seemed to me that the GFS lump did not last as long.

  • I use Humphrey. I like it, it's cheap, it burns hot, and lasts long for low and slows. I live in PA. Sorry, can't help you in Michigan. Is bet you can find it there.

Thanks for the comment. I just looked it up and it is cheap, even with shipping!

  • Welcome @butert !  I'm in Flint.  Where in the mitten are you?  Getting to the issue at hand, my go to lump is GFS because it is Royal Oak.  Also I have a GFS store right around the corner from me.

  • Their web site doesn't reflect super accurate pricing. I did a group buy and ended up buying 3 pallets. I have them shipped to a local trucking hub where I pick them up with my truck. I paid $13.19 per bag during my last group but. I have Lee Humphrey's contact info. PM me if you are interested. Sometimes they are hard to get ahold of. Email is the best way.

Depending on where you live in Michigan, you may be able to get a decent shipping rate. They are based out of Brookville, PA but all of their lump is made in Ohio. They had to move their manufacturing out of PA because of PA's environmental laws.

I'm based out of Dimondale MI (Lansing on the map) and Menard sells Royal Oak, I found there phone number on the internet and they shared that they were the supplier for BGE. I have had great luck with there lump. I hope this helps.

PS this is the first I have heard about GFS being the same as Menards Royal Oak  and BGE, Thanks for that info!

  • Holly, here...south of @Fred19Flintstone and @GK59, east of @butert
  • My dealer is @Owossoegger who is coincidently in Owosso.  Kevin organized a cook last June in Owosso at their Farmer's Market that was pretty fun!  I met some eggheads like @GK59 and @Bustersdad there.  I imagine he hasn't been on the forum lately because he's a heating & cooling guy and he must be very busy!  Kevin said he would organize another one next year and I can't wait to be a part of it.  Could it be the beginning of our own eggfest in Michigan?  I certainly hope so!!  I hope to meet and cook with more eggheads!

  • i'm in rockford, just northeast of grand rapids.  i'm using lazarri mesquite and hard wood.  my supplier is "herman's boy" right is rockford.  prices are pretty good - right around $13/20lbs.  i mix the two for most of what i cook.

I'm in Grand Rapids, SE side. Ace Hardware in Cascade (Kingsland's) carries Kamando, it has some nice big pieces. I bought my LBGE at Herman's Boy. I used the lazarri also, it works good. The hardwood was good for  slow cooking.
