Smoking with a ProQ cold smoke generator

Options
I want to use a ProQ cold smoke generator (basically a mesh maze/helix that is filled with sawdust and lit) in the egg: the egg is simply a smoke chamber. Does anyone have any experience of useful vent settings for this? I've had some salmon curing and then drying today : tomorrow is my first attempt at cold smoked salmon (as opposed to my usual planked, hot-smoke which is always brilliant!)

I do it all the time with my amaze-n-smoker. Just pulled 10lbs of cold smoked bacon off yesterday. I do it wide open bottom and top removed. I do it indirect with the smoker placed in the firebox below my adjustable rig. Smokes for 10-12 hrs and generates very little heat. Maybe 10-15 degrees above ambient temp.

Thx Cen-Tex - are you not tempted to close up the top a bit to hold the smoke in a little - or with no real heat meaning no chimney effect, is that not important?

nope. its plenty of smoke. I use Traeger pellets BTW. Not sure if yours will work with those but I like them

I ended up closing the top vents a little - smoke seemed just to whiz round the sides and out the top without too much gathering inside otherwise. It never went beyond 3C above ambient. (However, it was an unexpectedly warm day so I kept moving the egg into the shade!)

The ProQ is designed for sawdust - no idea if it would work with pellets http://www.amazon.co.uk/ProQ-PQCSG-009-Cold-Smoke-Generator/dp/B005OHSKAQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1381171886&sr=8-1&keywords=ProQ I ended up with two loads to get a decent level of smokeyness - about 18 hrs. Tastes good, but I think I want to leave the salmon a couple of days now for the flavors to develop.  Thx for the advice.

and Traeger pellets are cheaper than AMS pellets but they do come in really large bags. I bought 20 lbs of apple and it will last me a life time. As a matter of fact, they will disintegrate before i use half of them. i never used dust but i do like the pellets. They are just dust held together with a binder so there is really no quality difference other than the dust has no binder (which may be a good thing).
