I don't have any personal experience with the "flame thrower" types charcoal starters so this may not apply to them, but if you are striking a match for paper towel with oil, or paraffin cubes, or alcohol you may be looking for a way to get that fire going a little faster. The best tool that I have found for this is a hair dryer. Once the flames die out blast the pile of glowing lump with the dryer from the the grill area or shoot it in the bottom vent. In a minute or two you have a beautiful bed of coals. You only need the fan function, not the heat so a broken one with no working heat element is perfect.
A good source of cheap hairdryers is Goodwill or other second-hand type shops. The only problem is that if it is broken with no heat they may throw it away before you get there since "who would want that?"
Mine is always near at hand when I light up.

You know, I had to do that the other night. I had a beer in one hand, and my wife's $250 hair dryer in the other to get that thing started.CC, TX1 Small, 1 Large, BGE Lump... and a lot of love.

And if you don't have electricity handy you can buy one of these battery powered "personal fans" or a hand cranked blower fro under 10 bucks. I have since melted this plastic one but the crank one works fine!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

I've used a hair dryer and it works well, but most of the time I go old school since I don't have power within a few feet of where I egg.

An improved version of that is a heat gun. Basically a hair dryer that blows extremely hot air. They are relatively inexpensive and get the job done quickly. In my opinion, best and fastest way by far is a weed burner...and it's not even close.XL,L,SWinston-Salem, NC

I like to drink beer and wait, otherwise it would make extra time for honeydoos

I just run the hose from the propane tank from the old gasser thru the bottom vent and let her rip. Gets up to temp in no time.__________________________________________It's not a science, it's an art. And it's flawed.- Camp Hill, PA

My wife thought I was crazy when I grabbed one of her old hair dryers she was throwing away, but it works good when I need to get the egg up to temp in a hurry. Most of the time I like to let it come up to temp on its own. Gives more time for relaxing and enjoying cold beverages.

That's why I love my looftlighter...dual function gets the coals blazing quickly with direct touch or you can use the fan function to blast them with hot airExtra Large, Large, and Mini. Tucker, GA

+1 on time to have a beer. I usually go fast all day so when i egg it is about the whole process. I never rush
