O.T Crohn's and the egg?

Hey all...so my wife told me today that she has to cut out egg'ed foods cause her crohns is acting up and she thinks its from all the smoked food?

Anybody else ever have there crohns or any bowel disorders flare because of the egg??

Guess I will be cooking alot more as i still need to egg and will have to prepare some unegged meals also.

Kinda hurt to hear her say that but her health is whats most important.

Jamie.

  • Nothing here sounds related: Triggers for Crohn's, but who knows.  The wife (yes, the wife who....) gets many many migraines and we go through the "what could have triggered this bout" all the time.  It is frustrating and sometimes, you just have to go with whatever the sufferer believes is the problem.  But rule number 1 is "A happy wife is a happy wife."  'nuff said.  :)

Many things can cause Crohn's and UC to flare. Everything from foods to illness to stress. Food wise, there are no specific foods that set everyone off, but each person is affected differently. Commonly, very rich foods, raw vegetables, red meat and other foodie that are hard to digest can cause problems. Depending on her symptoms, she is also at higher risk for C. Diff infection. Depends on symptoms and how quickly they onset. I am not aware of any patients that are affected by smoked food as opposed to the type of food itself.

cant see it being the smoke, maybe more on what your cooking on the egg, maybe the meats too fatty, or spicey, maybe its the sauce. maybe it tastes to good and she is overeating, could be lots of things

What type of foods has she been eating? fishlessman is on point.
  • Sorry to hear of your wife's issues with Crohns. Having had the disease for over 30 years I can sympathize. At the suggestion of my gastro doctor my wife and I tried changing our diet. We have used Doctor Joel Fuhrmun's book "Eat to Live" as our guide.  We virtually eliminated red meat, most starch's, and most dairy products. It was not easy at first, but it can be done. Now on to Eggin. I cook on the Egg several times a week, lots and lots of cooked veggies, pizza, fish, and some chicken. Also discovered the joys of grilling tomatoes, pineapple, apples, watermelon, avocados and artichokes. I have realized a vast reduction in my Crohns related issues and firmly believe it is a result of the dietary changes we made. Good luck!!!!!

  • My sister has crohn's. She is down syndrome and lives with us. Her gastroenterologist swears it isn't triggered by food but it sure seems to be. She sneaks pop and chips when we have them in the house and the more often that happens the more flares she has. I'm seeing the specialist today and I'll ask him about egged food.

It must be the rubs and sauces I use because I mostly egg chicken.Occasionally steak, but only red meat once a week(sometimes twice). Maybe I shoudn't be wrapping the chicken in bacon so often lol.

Like the Naked whiz said she is set on blaming the egg cause its the only thing thats changed in her diet recently so I feel like this is going to be a losing battle:)

Sorry to hear she is having issues and hope you figure it out.  Completely different but my wife suffers from severe migraines as The Naked Whiz mentioned and trying to isolate the triggers can be a royal PITA.  As soon as you think you are on to something it all seems to change.  Good Luck!

That's also why it could be something else. Right now the the relationship is casual, not causal.

You might be right about the bacon, perhaps cut that out for a while. A lot of the patients I interact with can only tolerate chicken when eating "solid" meat(as opposed to ground meat).

  • Cherie has irritable bowel syndrome and I think the rubs are definitely a culprit, she is good with Dizzy Pig, Bone Sucking Sauce but there are a number of John Henry rubs that I like that we can't use.  We also avoid anything with MSG, Chinese Buffets and really any buffets isn't generally a good experience for her.  We know what restaurants to avoid and which ones to avoid and when in a new place what items on the menu are most likely to cause a pit stop on the way home.

  • I find people who use food logs are able to track with decent accuracy what may or may not be a trigger. My wife gets migraines from too much sugar and processed meats like hotdogs, lunch meats ect... So when she started her decent into healthy hell she figured it out over a few months.

My wife has UC, amongst other things.  Recently, it was recommend to cut out cinnamon and benzoates, stuff in a lot of processed foods.  She did not have episodes that she blamed on the egg, however my homemade rubs all had cinnamon.  We have tried to eat as little processed food as possible in the past few years.  Cutting out benzoates (contained in a lot of canned goods, jams ect) has just increased our dependence on fresh food.  We eat a lot of greens (via smoothies, love my Vitamix) and still eat egged food at least a couple of times a week.  Good luck.  Health issues suck, especially those related to food.
  • Hey my son,

What medication is your wife on? Prednisone? Imuran?

    Hey my son,

What medication is your wife on? Prednisone? Imuran?

She was on Imuran  for years but had  drug induced liver failure and turned very jaundiced and her LFT's skyrocketed about a year ago so she has been on nothing for a year now and all was well untill recently.Last week she was put on prednisone for a week and a half but since has been taken off of it.She maybe going to try remicade next.

Where is her disease? (colonic, perianal, small bowel, gastric)

If flaring, Prednisone may be the only option. Why was she stopped? If she has colonic disease, Entocort and Uceris may help and don't have the systemic side effects of Prednisone. At least until anti-TNF therapy takes hold. Can you guys get Stelara up in Canada? It's similar to Remicade but is self-injected like Humira. Helps save 2-3 hours at an infusion center.
  • My sister was in the hospital for two weeks up until a week ago. She had been on Imuran for six years and she stopped producing blood. After several transfusions her levels stayed up. She was prescribed Imuran because she became steroid dependent on Prednisone. I just got back from the specialist and we are going to proceed with the Humira. I really hope this works.

Imuran needs to be monitored closely by frequent cbc 's as it can damage your bone marrow and all blood lines.Tina my wife was very anemic and had some serious liver complications.Hope the new meds work out for your sister LS.

  • I hope your wife responds well too buddy. I did ask the specialist if there is anything food related that can cause flares and he said no. He has a lot of degrees in his office but I can't vouch for what he says.

The doc didn't mention stelara so it may not be approved here yet. Is it more effective than Humira? Our drug approval process is very arduous

    Canman,
Did the MD check her thiopurine metabolite levels? It can assist with optimizing doses. Since Azathioprine and mercaptopurine are weight-based, TPMT Enzyme Activity is done to see how the thiopurine will be metabolized. Thiopurine metabolite levels will show how the drug is being metabolized as sometimes people can maintain remission on lower than weight-based doses and sometimes higher-than doses.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I am a Nurse Clinical Coordinator for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at a hospital in Baltimore.

TPMT was done but oddly enough we never heard back about the result as my wife was discharged and we left for home. The TPMT was a request of mine but since she is never going on imuran again due to the risk of another drug reaction i'm not sure of its benefit at this point. If I have any questions I'll be sure to message you :)

In the meantime ill have to get the results for the TMPT testing.

Hope all works out, like @HavasuTom I'm a veteran with Crohn's, albeit only 20 years.
Mine triggered when I quit smoking and started eating healthy, cut back on the red meat and stayed away from fried foods.
If we plan to travel I start to eat like an idiot and all my symptoms disappear. Trouble is my cholesterol levels spike like crazy. Point is like @Eggcelsior says, food is not always the trigger for everyone but may always be the trigger for someone. Stress and emotional upset are things that will set me off.
Good luck, none of the CHILD (Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, Liver disorders) folks I know are bothered by BBQ.

@Little_Steven Humira is very effective for our patients. Stelara is not approved for Crohn's yet in the US(it's given largely for psoriasis). We have to try and get it approved "for compassionate use" which can take 3 months. It is in a 3rd stage trial and has good results. Approval will probably be in 18 months. It compares closely with Remicade, the advantage will be that it lowers the cost(relatively) for patients. Humira is 30k per year whereas Remicade can be double that due to infusion center costs.

@skiddymarker, you are completely backwards from the norm. :) Typically, the stuff that makes you better(smoking) worsens Crohn's. Not necessarily a bad thing, Crohn's wise.
  • @Eggcelsior - "backwards from the norm", you sound like my gastro guy, he often comments that I can't even get sick right!
@Canman1976 - sorry for highjacking this, it is obviously very important to you and your Lady. Again, of the six folks I know with some form of Crohn's, none have any known issue with BBQ.
