Is there a "hinged" grate available anywhere?

High que offers one that is 304 stainless steel. They are VERY proud of it.

You aren't kidding they are proud, and that is just for a large. I will need to keep looking!

Would one of these work?I dont' have an XL so you may want to measure the actual grate size.FWIW- if I want to add extra wood I just slip some chips through the grate. With 2 grid lifters and a pair of BBQ gloves, and a place to "land", it is not hard to remove the entire grid loaded with food. To be honest I can't even remember why I have needed to do this...but I have done it a couple of times.Which came first the chicken or the egg? I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Not sure if you'd be interested in cast iron, but here is an option that is a little less expensive than the high-que option in cast iron.Killen, AL (The Shoals)XL, Small, Minimax, and Mini BGEs

I just lift mine, rest it on the base and throw some in... 3 seconds.Green egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

Weber has one, but I don't know if 22-1/2" is big enough for the XL.

Same here......But if you still want a hinged grate, you can buy the Kamado Joe one. They MSRP for $75.00, but you can probably find one cheaper than that.
This guy might be able to custom make one for you: http://www.michaelscustomgrillworks.com//

I have one of the Hi Que's. Picked it up at the Athens Egg Fest. I like it a lot. Great for steaks and direct grilling. Easy to clean and easy to open. Just watch for the correct alignment with a plate setter legs up.

Another thing is if you have food on the grate... Gotta move it to open it.Green egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

we need to develop some sort of chute for adding chips under the PS which is under the grate. taking everything apart during a cook can drop the temp a couple of degrees while getting everything back together again. I have the 1/2 CI grates but don't use it with the PS (or at least I have not tried it with the PS yet.)...My grate remover is a hand-held garden shovel with a 45 degree bend on the end. works okay until the wife needs to do gardening while I am egging.

My neighbor has a kamado that has one... Not sure what kind mGreen egg, dead animal and alcohol. The "Boro".. TN

Just get an adjustable rig and there is room to add whatever you want.Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

Get yourself a PSwoo3 and you can lift grid, plate setter and all out at one time and add your wood. Super easy and quick. Welders gloves is all you need.-----------------------------------------analyze adapt overcome2008 -Large BGE. 2013- Small BGE and 2015 - Mini. Henderson, Ky.

Hi que sells a really nice thick gauge stainless with a hinge. Its the nicest grate I have seen and its hinged. Also over $100 though but its quality.
-
what you need is the big joe grid from kamado joe. It's 24", hinged and stainless. As a comparison, the bge xl 24" grid weighs 5.2 pounds. The hinged 24" big joe grid weighs 10.2 pounds. Don't ask how I know.......lolthanks for mentioning the PSwoo for the large!twww.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

I Agree with MattMan the PSWoo3 is great for adding chunks or chips.
-
Wow, lots of options here. The Craycourt looks interesting being CI. Big Joe looks like a possibility too. Where do I check out the PSWoo3? I assumed it was the ceramic grill store, but I do not see it there.
I have already lifted the grate to add wood once, but when the grate is raised or a larger cook, this is not a good option. Likewise the PS is in the way, but I think I could get some wood down in using tongs

You don't need one if you mix your smoke wood throughout the lump when you load it.

The easiest solution is the xl rig, 20 inch grid with 17.5 stone. My favorite set up on xl for one grid cook. Check YouTube ceramicgrillstore brisket cook. Dig the burnt ends. T.www.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

The adjustable rig looks like just the ticket. I need to wait for the right time to spend that kind of $ though. I don't think I would need my plate setter any more. Does anybody buy a used plate setter or do I store it above the garage along with the nest I will never use now that I have a table?

Back up from the dead. I can't find either the big Joe or the high que for sale anywhere. Also that Michael from the custom grid store is MIA. any other options??XL BGE and Kamado Joe Jr.

Get a pswoo - lift everything out at one time and add chunks/lump then replace woo. that’s how I do it. Works like a champ.Memphis, TN

High que can be found hereFor that price, I would go with the Woo or an AR and not look back.

I just use one of these

I can’t imagine you’d ever need to add lump to an XL. But on my stock grate I can slip pretty good sized pieces of wood in the slot._______________________________________________XLBGE
