Protecting our wooden handles?

I just got back from the Niagara Eggfest (which was a lot of fun, an eggfest at a winery is a GREAT idea). I noticed the new Large Eggs have cheap looking plastic handles which was pretty good incentive for me to protect my wooden handle. Do people stain their handles or do anything to protect it from the sun, rain and snow?

I will once in awhile use mineral oil on it and the wings. Other then that no maintenance needed.

While I haven't done it yet, my wife suggested coating the wood with mineral oil. She does turned pieces on a lathe, coats them with oil and they don't crack. Coat it once a week for a few weeks and it will last much longer. Now where's my oil??

There was someone here making custom wood handles ("hey, these are so easy, I could do them") that looked really nice.[this is not a recommendation, just something I found]

I coated mine with tung oil some time ago.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX.

My original wood handle seems to be getting smaller on my LBGE as I look at all the pics of custom handles. Before I know it, I'll need a pair of pliers to open my Egg.__________________________________________It's not a science, it's an art. And it's flawed.- Camp Hill, PA

Thanks all, what about using an outdoor wood stain to protect against UV rays?

I use a beeswax/mineral oil that I obtained from the folks that built my two maple cutting boards. Keeps the handle great looking and long-lasting just like the cutting boards.I also do put the BGE cover on both Eggs. Outdoor elements, particularly strong sun, cannot help but do long term damage to the wooden handle. Now that it appears that we will not be able to replace the wooden handle someday in the future, it is important to take care of it.SpringramSpring, TexasLBGE and Mini
