Large Fire Grates back in stock......

Please disregard this message if this doesn't apply.......

I had about 50 people on the waiting list for the LBGE expanded stainless steel fire grates--about half of which were from this board.  Got them cut on the plasma table this morning, and they're ready to ship.

I think I got everyone emailed this afternoon, but if I missed you, here's your notice.  Sorry, the emails were pretty scattered between direct, private message here, messages through my website, and the ones through the eBay store.

Sorry to use the board for this, but I just want to make sure I got everyone was notified.

Thanks, -J

They're $26.00 with free shipping for those of you on the forum here.  Just send me an email through my website and I'll get you an invoice.  If you go on eBay, you can read the description.  Just search for "Big Green Egg fire grate"  Don't buy it there though, since it's at a higher price.

They're 9-gauge flattened expanded stainless steel.  Very heavy duty and a major improvement to the BGE.  I have attached a picture of one installed in my LBGE.  I also am a dealer for the Pitmaster iQue temp controllers, Eggware SS chimney caps, and have the Contronics woven ceramic gaskets.  Charcoal is my main business, but I have these other products for fun.

Nope......The fire grate on the XL is 18" in diameter which is over 3x the material as the Large grate. There would be 4x the wasted stainless when cut out of the sheet, plus it would be 3x as much to ship because of the size & weight. My guess is it would be close to $100 shipped--way too much. Then to top it all off, I don't know if it will support that 10+ lbs of charcoal sitting on top of it at high temps.

Here's the solution, go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy TWO of the 18.5" Weber grates for their 22" grill. They're $8.97 last time I checked. Sandwich them together at a 90 degree angle to form a crosshatch. If you can spot weld it, hit it in a few spots to lock them together (or you can bound them together with a finish nail, safety wire, etc.) This will work just as well as what I would make, all for a 1/5 of the cost.  I've been running mine for 2 yrs without any issues.

Just for my understanding, what advantage will this give us? Maybe the answer will help someone else who may be wondering too. Thanks in advance...

The main thing is that it allows the ash to fall through rather than build up on top of the stock cast iron BGE plate.  That ash block (or charcoal fines) block air flow--thus is can't hit the lava temps, nor maintain a super low temp.  The thermodynamic engineers here have their theories of if it allows MORE air flow through than the BGE one with all things being equal.  All I know is that it's the single best improvement I've ever made to my BGEs.....and after many different materials and designs, this was the one that could withstand the heat and elements.

BTW, I have a pallet of Rockwood headed to Wichita on Monday for a group buy.  You might be able to snag a few bags.  If you're interested send me your email address and I'll pass it along to them.

Can anyone please comment on how this compares with the High-Que charcoal grate for the LBGE?

    Thanks!

  • I'm not sure since I've only used the stock grate.  I will let everybody know how I like it onve I've had it for awhile and run it thru it's paces.  I will admit that cost was a factor in my decision.

Sure!  I was getting ready to ship one to another member here, but I need to unlock PayPal to accept payments from Canada.  It's going to be US $35 for him.

Just send me an email and I'll let you know when I have the logistics worked out.  :)

Looks very cool.  Who manufactures it?  Any chance I can get some Rockwood charcoal with it?

We are the manufacturer of that grate.  I used to make them all myself with and angle grinder or a portable plasma cutter, but now I outsource them to a local company that just purchased a $50,000 plasma table.  They do much better work than I ever could by hand, and it takes a 1/10th of the time.  It's worth the extra money.

I only ship Rockwood on the pallet, so if you want to put together a group buy in your city, just let me know the ZIP and I'll get you a quote.  Otherwise, this is our only online dealer at this time:  http://www.ozarkspa.com

    Thanks!

I have one of these stlcharcoal firegrates that my Son gave to me as a gift. The only other grate I can compare it to is my BGE original, which I probably will never use again. I am sure it is comparable to the hi-que in the way it works and enhances the airflow. My lump consumption may have increased a little bit, but nothing that will break the bank compared to previous usage. Any of the small pieces of lump that fall through burn up on the bottom of the egg so there isn't any waste from it falling through. And, I have not had to use my wiggle rod to get the grate cleared for better airflow.  My Son, originally bought one for his small and was so impressed with the improvement on it that he bought the large too. He was ready to sell the small before using the new firegrate, but not now.

Mine is en-route.  cant wait to try it out.  I have been noticing the amount of ash in my lump after a cook. hoping to take my lows to 225-250 range where I previously would snuff out after 6-8 hours..

Curious whether anyone has gotten one of these yet and put it through its paces.  Mine should be arriving today, but won't be able to give it a whirl until my next charcoal order comes in on Thursday.  Anyone care to comment on performance?

I received mine on Friday and tried it on a brisket this Sunday.  Worked great.  Usually my CyberQ has the temp within 5 to 10 degrees during the cook but on Sunday it sat at the exact temp the whole time.  I attributed this to not getting any lump fines stuck in the stock grate.  Glad I bought it.
