I've gone through a number of different styles and sizes of refillable ones. The ones I like best are the McCormick use and toss ones. They work just fine.__________________________________________It's not a science, it's an art. And it's flawed.- Camp Hill, PA

I am in the market too. I typically use the Kirkland Signature ones(built into container like the McCormick) from Costco but the past 2 pepper mills have cracked during grinding. -
Peugeot, all stainless steel parts and they last forever. I've had mine for at least 10 years.

I followed Alton Browns' advice and got the Magnum. It grinds more volume-wise in shorter time.I have the tall one and I love it. They do have short ones, other various styles.LBGE 4/2012, MBGE 6/2012 & Mini 11/2013Rome, GA

For cooking I use a Kuhn Rikon Vase Spice grinder. It has inserts that hold the spice which allows you to use one grinder for different spices.
For the table I use Bodum Twin salt and pepper grinder. Not the best grinder, but does an okay job and looks good on the table.

I have the William Bounds grinders, that I love. The are 8 years old and going strong. The best part is that you can adjust the size of the grind.

I second the recommendation for the Wolfgang Puck battery powered salt and pepper lighted grinders. We've had ours for years and give them as gifts a lot. Still going strong. He also has another style that is nice. http://www.hsn.com/products/wolfgang-puck-bistro-spice-mill-with-peppercorns/7012934 We needed an extra set for the formal dining room so we didn't have to keep moving them from one room to another and tried 2 of these. These are gravity activated, so that's really nice. Right now, they are on sale for a great price.
