Rookie Lessons Learned

College roommate/frat brother/friend got a BGE in June, so naturally I had to have one. Was delivered on July 6th. Always have had gas grills before, so learning something new every time I cook something. This forum has been terrific for picking up tips and tricks, even if some of it is contradictory. So, for the benefit of any other newbies or wannabe's that may be reading this, here are some quick lessons learned:

1) DO NOT WALK AWAY from the egg when you are firing it up. This thing can go NUCLEAR in five minutes. It is OK leave lid open for the first 7 to 10 minutes when staring up the coals, but STARE at the thermometer when you first close the lid. An adult beverage in hand is helpful during this process.
2) IT IS MUCH EASIER TO SET THE TEMPERATURE ON THE WAY UP, almost impossible to bring it back down again after any period of time. Refer back to rule #1. Make sure the temperature is stabilized, with platesetter, meat, whatever, in the egg before walking away. The temp will want to climb initially, so don't go far. I am still learning how to control temp, but so far have more success closing down the bottom vent than playing with the daisy wheel.
3) THE QUANTITY OF ACCESSORIES, (EGGCESSORIES... OR TOYS) THAT YOU WILL WANT IS BOUNDLESS. "Want" and "need" are the same thing. Everything is "bout a hundred." But that is OK, just be prepared. Buying your BGE is just the beginning.
4) THE BGE EXPERIENCE IS A CULT. A fun, harmless one, but a cult. A good thing.

    Or do what I did and open it when it's nuclear and get a big fireball in the face. Burned my eyebrows and almost all of the hair on my right arm.

    I'm a slooooow learner.  I do know the importance of "burping" the egg, but I have had to grow hair back on my arm more than a couple of times!

    Welcome to our world. Agree with you, just I close my lid as soon as light fire (not the 6 or 7 mins).

    Welcome. Please post a sign close to your egg that reads "burp the & #@ egg on hot cooks so after 27 beers you don't lose all your eyebrows.

    Another rookie mistake commonly made...BURP your egg for christ's sake!  I've singed arm hairs on a few occasions because I decided to just open the egg....bad idea.

    You will get good enough to adjust the air damper ahead of time once the coals are fired up. Or at least close enough to do a final adjustment once it gets close to your wanted set point.

    Once the coals are lit I never would recommend leaving the vent all the way open unless high temps are wanted.

    Ooops... forgot one... actually the very first lesson I learned from reading these forums... 

    1A) IN ORDER TO KEEP THE DAISY WHEEL FROM FLOPPING AROUND WHEN YOU OPEN THE LID, ONE YOU HAVE YOUR SETTING, SIMPLY LIFT UP THE DW AND LINE UP THE TWO SILVER SCREWS FRONT TO BACK. Then Sir Isaac's laws take over and the setting won't change when you lift the lid.

    Or, don't use it at all. Just another way to Egg. That is what is so cool about this forum/and Eggs; several ways to do the same thing and they all work. Where are you located?
