I bought about a dozen bags of Ozark Oak last winter. Then I bought a bunch of Royal Oak. Been using the R O for past couple of months. Just found the last bag of Ozark and started using it a couple days ago. The difference between them is pretty amazing. The RO took about 20 minutes or longer to eliminate the bad smell (VOCs). The Ozark is ready in 10. Plus the pieces are fist sixe and very little dust. Also so far no strange looking pieces that look like lumber yard or flooring waste.

    Here comes Henapple in 3....2.....1.... But I agree, I had some WGWW and it took 30-45 min to burn off the VOCs. it is amazing the differences in lump.

    A question re: VOCs. What happens to the VOCs of the unlit coals as in what would be going on in a multi hour cook ? . If from what I've read in other threads about lighting in one spot or several , it seems to me that VOCs would only be burned off if all the coals were burning?

    Mainly due to location, i have been using RO about 95 percent of the time.  I cook three to four times a week.  I don't make a study out of lump products, but i have NEVER found flooring waste or lumber yard waste in any RO bag i have used.  I have found it in other manufacturers, like Best of The West, and a few others.  Those products did not light like normal RO products.  I have found some of their products didn't even burn --  it was like cut tree limbs??

    On the VOC, I believe you're looking at the volume of production.  There's a lot of new burn initially, but as time passes, you're just getting a bit more and then a bit more and...

    I'd stick to the royal Oak... Ozark Oak sucks.

    VOC's start burning off at just over 300 F. The ambient air temp around the unlit lump will get hot enough to start this process.

    I have been using RO lately because it is cheaper in my area but I much prefer Ozark Oak. It sparks less, is ready faster, and seams to last a little longer.

    Royal Oak is ok. When I've used it it sparks like a 4th of July sparkler. I prefer Ozark Oak.

    RO is great for a clean burn, not for a burn clean.

    The last group (8 bags) of RO I bought is mainly small pieces, take a while to get going and doesn't last for long cooks. Looking for OO bunt my local is out, and has been.

    @bo_mull I had the same problem (live in SoCal) and then someone on here pointed me to http://www.firecraft.com/. Free shipping in US on orders over $100. I bought three new sauces (Blue's Hog is EXCELLENT!), three new Dizzy Pig Rubs, five bags of OO for $10 a pop and had it all dropped off at my door. Bags were a little beat up during shipping, two were slightly torn, but the lump is still in good shape and burns really nicely. Very, very happy with this transaction and with the OO. I'll be buying this way again.

    I have been using both. Both are good stuff with the RO being cheaper. The Ozark has a more pleasant smell and doesnt pop like the RO. The Ozark is about as fine as you can get in my opinion.

    I bought some RO recently because I didn't want to make a separate trip to my oo supplier. Big mistake. Wasted more time waiting for RO to become usable than it would have taken to buy OO.

    I don't have any issues with the amount of time it takes to burn off VOC, 95%  of my cooks are long and low.

    I tend to run the egg for 45 minutes to make sure I have the temp stable before I cook anyway.   

    But then - if you are coming home, heating up the egg to cook dinner - I totally understand your point.
