    By cooking on it.

Cook a few butts low and slow. Nothing fancy, just start cooking. Higher temp cooks will "clean" the gunk "seasoning" off.

Some will prolly argue that your not seasoning it, but I see the difference in a new one and a funky black one.

Many people say that it is best to not cook super hot (above 500 or so) for the first few cooks because it will melt off the gasket.  Other than that, there is no requirement to season the egg. Just cook a few things at 400ish or below and you will be good to go.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.
