I'm try an lay a coat of Spar Poly urathain on my table tonight.

It is stained with Olympic stain/sealer.

Should I sand that before I lay the first coat?

Yes and in between coats if you are doing more than 1.

EDIT: I missed the stain part. Did you use an oil-based stain? Then no, only between clear coats.

If the stain raised the grain of the wood(oil-based typically doesn't) then a light sanding to smooth stuff out.

I wouldn't. I would leave the stain alone and let the first coat of poly get the "hairs" to stand up and then start the sanding process. Just me.

You should be good to go. Just sand between coats to eliminate any bumps. They can get magnified with each additional coat.

Lots of thin coats typically work better than a few thick coats.

for sanding in between coats can i use an electric sander with 220 grit? or is that too strong. I heard someone say just rough it up with wire wool.

Lightly hand sand is my method of choice. It will give you a better feel for the wood and control. ;;)

No second egg in my cards. I went shopping today but for a mortar and pestle. I had a hard enough time convincing MDSH that I needed the first egg. ;;)

The longer you can go between coats the harder the poly...the better results sanding.

You can also use fine steel wool, usually my choice. And with poly, make all the undercoats gloss (it's harder than matte). If you want to tone down the shine, make the final coat matte or buff down with very fine steel wool.

2 days would be good. At least 1 day depending on temp, humidity, etc...

I just hand sand between coats. Never sand a stain - clear coat it first. The sanding does two things - it removes the bumps and it gives the next coat a surface to adhere to. I generally follow the instructions on the paint can as far as number of coats, time to dry between coats, etc. More thin coats look better than fewer thick coats. Use a good brush.

Be sure to drink lots of beer while you watch it dry. Tell swmbo that it's imperative to stay there with it.
