Searing (again)

Has anybody tried using the original grate (drain cover) on top of the coals for searing? I know some just trow the steaks on the coals, just wondering if the grate on top might work.

Seen several posts of useing a smaller grate laying directly on the coals. But never the " drain cover".

I think it would, almost like a griddle sear. It is CI after all. I would season it first.
