Also under the egg all I have is a piece of tile is that enough to prevent the shelf from burning or is it best to have something thicker like a stepping stone?

You'll burn your shelf. You need an air gap - if you have the little green feet, those work, or a nest, or something. That's preferable to the egg sitting directly on a thicker stone, which can get just as hot (but take longer to get there).

Do they still offer the feet? I bought a large BGE with the small table a month ago and my dealer sits all of his eggs on two of the small cement blocks.
I don't really care for the look. but I know something has to be there to keep it off of the wood.
