Gasket replacement time!

The time has come to replace the gasket on my LBGE. I've received a new one from BGE and was wondering about the adhesive. Is the self-stick adhesive sufficient, or, is it recommended that I use something additional? Any thoughts???

Had mine on for about two months now, seems to stick just fine. I did clean the old one off, warm egg, some elbow grease, razor scraper and scrungie dipped in acetone. cleaned up nicely, placed the new one on, checked dome alignment, left it closed for 24 hrs, then a nice low heat fire to "set" it. Seemed to work out just fine.

Or just don't replace it....... Works fine w/o it, just don't drop the lid.....

Replaced mine with the new high temp. BGE gasket. Scraped my old one off with a little help from acetone, peeled the new gasket off the tape and stuck it on! Been a couple months and its solid!

My Nomex gasket is going on 3 years now and looks good, even after many pizza cooks. I don't understand why they don't install Nomex at the factory. It would be a great sales feature.

Sam - I have a new Nomex still in the package (from High-Que) and it looks different (other than color) from the high temp BGE gasket my dealer gave me. As new eggs are shipping with the BGE high temp, which many call a Nomex, are they in fact the same (other than color) as a Nomex?

Anyone else know?

The Big Green Egg now comes with a high temp gasket right out of the box. That change was made 5 months ago.

Nomex is a registered trademark of the Dupont company. Nomex is a heat resistive material developed by Dupont and licensed to others for their specific applications. 2 examples are from http://www.high-que.com/ and http://www.bbqgaskets.com/about.html I don't know if 1 is better than the other but the pictures show different products with the same name. Look it up with Google.

I used the 3m spray. They say it's easier to remove the old when the egg is warm. I used a palm sander.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I'm doing my gasket on the first..

Which 3M spray, if it's used, is the one to get?

And - do I replace the gasket on both hemispheres, or just the bottom (or top)?

What gasket are you using - Nomex - it's usually self-adhesive. If it's a Rutland, follow this. http://www.nakedwhiz.com/rutlandgasket/gasket.htm

I wouldn't use spray adhesive. Most important thing you can do it make sure the lip is clean from old gasket and oil. Once you scrape/sand off the old gasket, clean the hell out of it with a solvent like acetone or isopropyl alcohol.

Nomex replacement from BGE. I'll scrape and acetone the lip clean. Gasket on both sides?

I used a 3M spray adhesive that was recommended by an Egg rep. Worked like a charm and still going strong. If you get the ceramic clean and free of oils it will bond tight.

The self adhesive says only to replace above 50° so I'm guessing SWMBO is gonna love me bringing Eggsie in the house to swap out the gasket
