Santa delivered my loot today (KA pasta maker stuff - http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/product/KPEX - 18 pounds of I-talian steel.  And I don't have to play "store under the tree" until x-mas.  We have a tree, but homie don't play reindeer games.  Coincidentally, most of Mrs B's stuff got delivered today too.  She just sent me her Amazon wish list, and I imported it and clicked "buy" on everything.  Shopping's never been easier!

Christmas has always been difficult for the wife since I have a problem with buying myself "toys".  In 2012, my "I love me some me" gifts have all been egg related in some shape or form.  Last month, we (really for me) got a KitchenAid Pro 600 so I can make pizza and other baked goods on the Egg.  On Saturday, my 1st DSLR arrived...so I can take higher quality food pics!  Later today, my Sous Vide Supreme Professional Chef arrives, which is my Xmas & Birthday present (says the wife).  She did make me sweat it out for 2 weeks before she told me to order it.

So as you can see, it all comes back to the egg.  Really finding I like photography though, so I think i'll use it more than just for food photos.  I'm eager to learn and I understand that i'll be learning for the next million years.  This is a shot I took of my son... composition is off but I still love the moment, which is what matters most.

What i'm looking forward to most is this lil guys face light up when he sees the new train table we got him!   :D

Good lookin' kid, Cazzy, must take after his mother ;)

    What camera did you get?

I've been into photography since I was around 12.

Best tips on setting up your camera - program it (if you can) so the autofocus button is NOT the shutter button.  You want a light touch on the shutter button to freeze the exposure, and an alternate button to autofocus.  I learned this method from a photojournalist friend who works for the local paper.  This frees you up to focus, meter on some neutral area, then compose and shoot.  IMHO, simple way to get great pictures.

Also, zoom lenses - screw 'em.  Get a fixed focal length wide angle - I use a 24mm f2.8 95% of the time.  I have a 50 f1.4 I rarely use, a 100mm f2.8 macro that's great for portraits and 1:1 close up stuff, and a big 300mm f4 for the beach (I kid! I kid!) compressing scenes.  Super contrast, super sharp. Learn about depth of field, all the basic stuff.  It's really easy.

Zoom lenses make you lazy.  It's the stoker of cameras.  Fixed focal length makes you walk around and "feel" the frame, because you have to work for it.  Graduate to zoom, take them on vacation, but if you compare your shots, you'll have an epiphany.

Thanks...but he actually looks just like me thank you very much.   :P

I really really wanted a full frame camera, but several of my friends told me to start with a more "beginner" camera.  With that, I picked up a Canon T4i.  I like it, but am still surprised I didn't get a Nikon.  I wanted a Nikon for years and years, so I don't know how I ended up with Canon.  None the less, still happy with the quality...especially coming from a P&S.  I have a few lenses but so far, my favorite is the 40mm 2.8.   lens.  The zoom lens that came with the package is pretty crummy so I'll prolly unload it on CL.

I eagerly look forward to picking up this lens:

I've had both Canon and Nikon systems - a lot of them.  I like the ergonomics on Canon's bodies better.  That's a very decent camera.  I'm not apple/microsoft or iphone/android on cameras.  They're just tools. The lens is what matters - megapixels, schmegapixels.

If I could have just one lens, I'd get the 24mm f2.8.  Sharp as hell, around $330 or so.  Light, small.

I want a full frame - the EOS 5D mark II or III.  I can afford it, but my older 10D is still running strong, and I'm not gonna take any "better" pictures with it.  The full frame would be nice.....

Other than the lens, get a good rotating head flash and a diffuser for it.  Learn to bounce the flash.  Light is EVERYTHING.  The built-in flash sucks.  I'd almost recommend smashing it with a screwdriver, because it just makes pictures look terrible.  It sucks to lug around a giant flash, but it makes a big difference.   Shooting with no flash is awesome too, you learn light best.  I usually use flash, even in daylight, for fill, or bounce it off something and get some fill or create some contrast.  Fun stuff.
