Knife Comparisons

I just stumbled upon this. Has anyone seen it? I think it's great. My mom brags on Cutco, but I used them at her place over Thanksgiving and they are not good. Now, I realize this is an out-of-the box test, but if anyone has a better comparison, please post.

Too cool! I have Globals and Mac's. Wish they didn't go int the dishwasher so often though.

i have a single bevel global deba, would be hard pressed to find a knife that can slice thinner. they are right about the handle, i have a permanent calous built up on my index finger from that knife, even took the back of it to the sander to round it up but still no good. they need to put their blades on a better shaped handle instead of one that looks nice

Well that settles it. I have a set of pro s henckles that I bought prior to really knowing what I was doing.

They are ok and hold a great edge however, the handle sucks. Over thanksgiving, I used them so much my hand was almost crippled.

It's time to start buying them out of the rotation.

Travis, I was going to start buying Shuns cause I didn't like the feel of the globals but after handling them they just didn't feel right. I tried the MAC and really liked the way they felt. Wife is allowed to use the Globals but not the MAC's

Steven, I have med-lg hands with fingers like sausages. I grip stuff like a cave man and those henckles suck when I choke down on them for serious work.

I need to find a place that will let me try the knife out prior to purchase.

I saw that after I posted. That really isn't what I meant .My sister who lives with us is Down syndrome. She is 51 but has the attitude and work ethic of a teenager. Her job is to clear up the kitchen when we are at work. When she is mad at me I will usually find one of my Macs in the dishwasher.

Travis,

I only buy knives at restaurant supply places cause they sell for about the same as you pay. Our retail places are double. The two places I go will let you handle them. I would think a really big place would have samples that you could cut with.

I too have MAC and Global knives. I have had them both for some time and prefer the Global. I might be in the minority, but Global seems to hold an edge better, clean easier, and fit my hand a little better. Just my opinion though.

I agree that they hold an edge better but I use a ceramic "steel" on the Mac's before every use. Knives are a really personal choice.

Travis - I've bought a couple of Shun knives from Williams Sonoma, you can handle and cut with them. The drawback is they give you easy to cut, well rounded veggies. I usually don't experience issues cutting up zucchini..... Also, not sure if you shop ther or are aware, but they give a 10 percent military discount (from your posts I gathered your active duty). I've had Henckels 5 star and Pro S for 20+ hrs, now slowly moving to Shun.

I recently found a sur la table kinda close. I was getting an iPhone 5 from the domain in Austin tx and saw it on the way out.

The domain made want to vomit (Louie vaton, Starbucks, Burberry ect) but ill be going back to check out sur la table.

Funny you say that. My wife left with some kind of purse. (Not LV) I suggested she get a reasonable coach bag for $100 or $200. She quickly quipped and quoted the price of both my eggs. I humbly acquiesced and handed her my debit card.

You know you are screwed when a coach bag is beneath SWMBO.

I am just below level 2 right now. So, I am starting to look at knives like this (more brands on each level, but wanted to make tiers, will do what I can afford for 4 knives):

Level 1: [Insert Generic Name]

Level 2: Oxo Good Grips

Level 3: Victorinox

Level 4: Tojiro

Level 5: MAC / Shun

I need to keep sharpening too!

I have a complete set of Global's. Wife got them at a HUGE discount just because the block had a small dent in it. They are by far the best knifes I've ever owned, and my previous was Henkel's pro twin S. I use those to cut open boxes now.

Tojiro are way above mac and shun. I would give up my $300 shun bob Kramer before I would give up my $60 Tojiro and that is a bottom of the line Tojiro. Do a quick eBay search for Tojiro and check out some of his nicer blades.
