Hinges hitting counter top

We are days away from moving into our new house and last night I assembled my LBGE in it's custom cut granite hole in the outdoor kitchen.  Boy was I disappointed when I realized the hinges hit the countertop before the lid was fully opened.  Maybe I missed a thread or important note either here or in my instructions but I had no idea to allow for those.  I figure I have two options, either raise the BGE up an inch or cut a notch out of the granite in the back allowing the hinges to recess below countertop level.  I don't really want to raise the egg because I like the cooking surface where it is.

I really wish I had taken some pictures last night but I wanted to get some input anyway.  I'll post some later this afternoon.  Other than that little snafu it turned out exactly like I wanted.  I even bought some sausage to cook on it last night and had to put them back in the refrigerator!

Can't wait to grill!

    I would just raise it. Do you have the 3 feet under it,.You'll need the air space anyway.3/4" isn't much.

  • You have stated your solutions, raise the egg or notch the top. I would raise the egg, it is quick and easy and then if you find you cannot adapt to the additional inch or two, you can always notch the top. On the other hand if you don't mind the look of a notched top, go for it. 

    The only other option is to lower the table top, but usually that is not an option.

  • Try raising the egg first - it is easily reversible if you do not like it. And it gets you going fast. Then if you don't like it, you can cut the granite.
  • Steven, I used a 4 1/2" grinder with a diamond cutting blade to grind two recesses into my polished concrete counter to allow for the hinges. I laid out the two areas very carefully with pencil then outlined the area with blue painters tape, turned the cutting wheel sideways and took material off slowly and made sure to closely match both holes. Because my egg is set into a corner I did not bother to polish out the recesses but it can be done pretty easily.

    I notched mine in the back.  Just like the look of the egg sitting lower in the table.  Not a big deal either way though...

  • Thanks to all for the replies.  Thank goodness the granite installer brought all my excess over.  I had a piece laying around that I slipped under the egg to bring it up enough to open the lid.  My thought now is that I'll just get the brick mason to put a layer of mortar under the granite base when he shows up tomorrow and raise it up about 3/4".  The 1 1/4" granite brought it up plenty with 1/2" spare.

  • Have a blacksmith fabricate you a custom egg stand. Your specs, height and clearance.

    I'd just get the little green feet and put them under the egg.  The air gap is a good thing, and I've seen at least one similar configuration result in cracked granite.

  • The paver under my large cracked my last pizza cook or maybe I just noticed it then, I don't know.  I ordered a table nest for I think $24.  The crack is evident during a pizza cook, but not after it's cool.  I had another pizza night tonight to show my mother-in-law.

    Funny thing, I used my small (new this summer) for the first time for pizza and kept smelling hair burning.  I thought some flash burned some arm hair, but after the cook I noticed the gasket looked a little toasty.

  • BGE table nest is a clean way to get air under the Egg. Cooler operation, looks better and gets the height you need. IMO

    I second the BGE table nest recommendation. Air circulation under the egg is preferable.

    Yeah, the nest is probably the best solution, although it'll raise the egg up a little more than the green ceramic feet.
