What accessories should my wife buy me for Christmas this year? I have an XL with a platesetter, cheap thermometer that works fine but is slow, decent cooking utensils, and a rib rack. What do you guys recommend? I want a Thermapen and a cast iron cooking surface. Who makes the best CI?

Depends on your budget. Definitely get a Thermapen. If you can get away with a swing rack...it's not CI, but it's as heavy and massive, plus give you the option for two levels of cooking - great for side dishes like veggies.

You're right about Thermapen. There is no substitute. Are you talking about a CI grid? I have BGE's and I like it. I have a large, not an XL if it makes a difference. I'm hoping for an Adjustable Rig & Spider from Ceramic Grill Store.

I have a wish list for Xmas as well. Fortunately, I have CI and thermapen now. I would opt for the Thermapen, depending on the budget like NOLA said). It's so freaking sweet!

Like mentioned above, you want the thermapen and then the adjustable rig and spider with the cast iron grid for the small to use down on the spider for searing close to coals.

Quinn the eskimo: I was just on the ceramic grill store website. I didn't see the CI grid for the spider. Do they sell it or do you buy from someone else?

Brew: I have kicked around the idea. I'm a little embarrassed to say that I haven't done any true low and slows yet. I did some ribs for about 4.5 hours but no butts or brisket yet. I've done tons of chicken, burgers, steaks, salmon.

Don't even consider it if you don't plan on doing a lot of briskets, hams, pork butts, shanks and other fatty, tough roasts.

Dude...don't be embarrassed. Look at my "post #" compared to NOLA's. I just got my EGG 3 months ago. I have been passionate about cooking for 2 decades but have just found the "Fix" known as the "low and slow". Jump out there and do a butt. It's really simple and a ton of fun to have the EGG going for hours. Let me know if I can help.

I think the 13" grid is for the large spider. You would need what fits the XL. Dunno what size that is. Little help from you XL Spider owners?

yeah, didn't realize looking for XL. For some reason I think the right one is the large's 18" CI but I'm not positive. Hopefully someone who knows for sure can answer...

from CGS:: For searing on cast iron grids, we recommend BGE's 15-inch medium or 18-inch large cast iron girds (items 15CI and 18CI, respectfully). If you routinely do large numbers of steak, go with the 18. If you routinely do four or less steaks, the 15 is a good size grid. The 15-inch diameter matches well with our Lump Reducing Rings.
