Permatex Copper Used as a Gasket Question???

I know it can be done....I've checked out the method detailed on the Naked Whiz's site and it seems pretty solid, but my question is for those that have done it and had it on for a WHILE, how does it hold up? Rutland and Nomex are discussed ad nauseum here so I feel like I know how each will last over time, but there is nothing on Permatex durability. Can anyone inform me? I don't really care if you just did this a few weeks ago and it still looks great, I want to know if it will really last...thanks!

Bueller........Bueller. Ok.....let me try this way. The write up on naked whiz site was done by 'frank from Houma'. He's on the other forum and I'm not and don't plan to join (I lurk a little). Does anyone here that frequents both have any idea if he's still using Permatex as a gasket and if its held up over the years?

I haven't used it so I don't have any personal experience, but there are many peeps saying it's a "permanent" solution, and others saying they've gone years with Permatex Copper and Rutland.

Yeah, I was using Rutland gasket with the black Rutland adhesive but the adhesive has begun to fail...the stuff is water soluble and must have gotten too damp/wet. I have no problems going back to the Rutland with Permatex, but really like the idea of just using Permatex as written up here http://www.nakedwhiz.com/gasketsafety/permatex.htm
-
Oh, I totally misunderstood you. I thought you were talking adhesive for a gasket, not as the gasket.

There were a couple relevant threads on the search results you posted....thanks. It looks promising....I think I'm gonna give it a go. Of course I'll document the process and post results.
-
Cool, yeah I recall seeing one of those threads before and it didn't click that the adhesive WAS the gasket until I read something like ..."and now the second coat..."

Well, I haven't done this yet, though this is the route I'm gonna take when I finally do replace my gasket - but, the way I look at it is like this:
If you use a nomex or rutland gasket, then use the permatex to adhere it - the setup is as good as the weakest link. So the next question is, what is the weakest link? Is it the gasket material, or the gasket adhesive? BTW, the Permatex stuff actually IS a "gasket making material" anyway - that's what they use between things like valve covers on engines, etc.
Anyway, I guess my point is that if the Permatex is the weakest link, then if you use it to adhere your rutland or nomex - then it's eventually gonna fail anyway. But if the folks who have used it to hold the rutlands & nomexs on haven't experienced any issues w/ it failing or coming off, or burning off, etc... then it should be A-OK to use by itself...
At least that's MY logicDon't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup... Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. - Bruce Lee -
I had it as a gasket on a large, it was fine but melted with my first clean burn. Scraped it off and I don't miss it.

Botch did one recently here

Don't know how it's holding up though haven't followed the thread much -
found some pics from when it started to go bad
-
man, that's terrible. Did you have any bad gasket odors when it started burning up?

Nope, it burns clean
Some say it may have something to do with the sun hitting it, not uv resistant but there's not much sun inside an engine ...
Maybe some of you chemists can confirm that -
Yikes...that's the first I've seen of that. I've never considered a 'clean burn' and probably never will, but I do high temp pizzas (800*+) with my stones set up pretty high in the dome that push a lot of heat to the gasket...this could be an issue, but even when I was using the Rutland that heat wasn't a problem.
-
I think I was at 1200 degrees...
-
I don't do clean burns either....at least not on purpose. I've gotten distracted and come back to the thermometer wrapped. Doesn't take that long if you already have it hot for pizzas or searing.

I used Permatex Ultra Copper as my only gasket for one year. It is really designed to BE a gasket, rather than a gasket adhesive. Because of some irregularities in the edge of my Egg's halves, I begin to notice some places where hot gas appeared to be escaping. Perhaps I should have applied a thicker layer of Permatex. If you do choose the Permatex only, I'd align the dome as well as possible, put a 1/8" layer on clean (grease free) ceramic, Spray one side of cling-wrap with PAM and stretch it across the lower half of the Egg. (PAM side on the Permatex). Close the lid overnight. Trim the excess tomorrow. It comes off easily. I like the Rutland on top because it is nearly indestructible and provides a little more cushioning when closing the lid.

Poop, this is the first I'd read that they burn with a pizza cook, which I do regularly (as Utard mentioned above, I just installed one, haven't even cooked on it yet). Well, time will tell..._____________
Remember when teachers used to say 'You won't have a calculator everywhere you go'? Well, we showed them.

this one looks promising:

Has anyone tried silicone? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16803002316&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-NA-_-NA

That stuff is used in door jambs and computer rack doors to guard against smoke damage to data equipment, it is not high temp And will burn at the temps the bge can generate.
-
Nomex and silicone have about the same max temp limits. I can see how that gasket (being thin) could get damaged. Permatex copper is basically silicone caulk with additives. Just wondering if anyone has tried pure silicone.
