Extra Special Birthday

My wife's special birthday (#30) is November 9. I was going to invite family over and use the egg - was thinking beef tenderloin.

However, she just informed me that I'm going to be a first time daddy. Party just got upgraded to a "reveal" to the family and the meat may be changed to a prime rib. There's a shop in town that sells 30 day aged prime rib and I was thinking of picking one up. They tell me I need to buy the whole log at 15-17 pounds.

Is my large egg big enough to fit that large of a roast? If I cut it in half, would it fit?

Congrats. My father-in-law cooked a prime rib on my egg a few weeks ago as I was traveling back into town, got home just in time to eat! Anyway the one he cooked was 12.48lbs i just texted him to see if there would be room to cook one 15-17 lbs and he said probably but it would be close. Sorry can't be more specific b/c I didn't see the slab he cooked until it was off the egg.

Congratulations! Do enjoy the prime rib while you can afford it, but also know that children are worth every penny. So pleased for you and your wife!

Congrats man. Is that 30 day dry aged? If the primal's too big for the grate, you can cut it in two. An advantage to that is you get a couple extra end cuts that will be more on the medium side for those people that don't like rare/MR meat. To cook a rare/medium rare cut up to order (med/med well), you can throw it in a pan of au jus.

Congrats! The rabbit only died once for us, but we have enjoyed all of the last 9 years! (plus i still bought an egg!!!) Kids don't make you poor, they help you realize what is important in life!

Regardless if it would fit or not, you should cut it in half. Makes no sense to keep it whole for the reasons nola said above.

Congrats!!!!! Kids are great, I have a 4 year old girl, 2 year old girl, and a 3rd on the way due in January (boy). They are a blast and make so many fun memories!

Congratulations!

Bone on. Have butcher cut bones away, but not off - so they sort of flap. Season generously between bones and meat. I start with the egg around 500 and then drop down to roasting temp (300 - 350 depending on time available).

+1 with Nola, have done this with a full 7 rib, 3 on one piece, 4 on the other. Nice choice of "doneness" for the crowd. Happy Birthday to your lady and congrats on expecting the wee one. As she goes through the pregnancy, hope all is well and you are about to get a first hand understanding of the term SWMBO, and if you thought egg ownership was expensive you ain't seen nothing yet, best of luck!!

already completely funded! Started at birth! Did prepaid college before it went sky high, and invest about $50.00 weekly to cover any related expenses like books, computers when the time comes ( as long as the economy does not crash completely which is not out of the question). Plus......pay for private school for the last 5 years (pay in advance, and they will discount you!) Plus, pay for ice skating in South Florida! She could not have picked a more expensive sport, but it is good discipline, and there are winners and losers! (not everybody gets a participation trophy) And, despite all that, i still have money! I would not trade her for anything in the world. On the other hand, i may have more money without a child, but it is all about priorities and perspective!

Congrats on the baby! The last 4 bone rib I cooked was 11.9 lbs and looks to have been around 8.5-9" long in the pics. I suspect you could find a 7 bone that fits but you'd have to protect the ends from direct heat. In your shoes, I think I would cut it in two like Nola & Skiddymarker.

Congratulations to all the expectant fathers! In a few months, I expect to see requests for baby food recipes for the BGE. (i.e. you can cook mashed peas at 225 indirect for 2 hours...) ;)
