Dome Temp and Grid Temp

First things first! Hello to all....glad to be here! I have been reading and learning from here for a while so now that I have a little knowledge I figured I would join in.

My question is and please forgive me if this has been ask many times over....on my cooks when I use the Digi Q my Grid temp and dome temp are the exact same temp every time. is this a good thing or a bad thing?

I have seen many post and talk about the dome temp and grid temp being different.

Jamie, I too use a DigiQ and in the beginning of the cook I see about a 25 or 30 degree higher temp with the dome. The longer the cook goes, the less the disparity in temps.

Calibrate your dome thermo. I got a second BGE about a month ago and the thermo on it was about 20 degrees off.

Thanks for the reply. I have had my egg for about six months now and have cooked on it at least once a week and several times on the weekend and it has been the same every time since I've had it. there has never been a difference in the two.

is this normal? should I still calibrate the dome thermo?

Most folks would say to calibrate all of your thermometers. I have never calibrated my DQ, but did calibrate my dome and it as I said in boiling water it was over 230 degrees instead of 212.

Somebody will come along and give you better advice than me, but I will add if the BGE is cooking like you want it to, then don't spend a lot of time worrying about it.

This may or may not explain the mystery. Is your DigiQ pit probe clipped to the grid or is it clipped higher then that in one of those "trees" or perhaps even on the dome themo itself? That would account for the temps being the same. Sometimes it's the obvious that eludes us.

I call them "trees". You stick it in your grid and it becomes a convenient thing to clip your temp probe to.

If you got a Digi Q and you are measuring the temp at the grate, just ignore the dome temp. Doesn't really matter what it says, you've already got the important temp....the one at food level.

When I first got my Auber, I was freaking out because that temp was different than the dome temp which was different than the Maverick I was using. I finally shut off the Maverick, ignored the dome and went to bed trusting the temp at the grate. Been doing it ever since.

I recommend calibrating all your thermometers regularly. It only takes a few minutes and will give you peace of mind.

Duganboy, semi +1. I agree if it is cooking the way you want, don't mess with it. But being an engineer, it makes me have a caniption fit to not calibrate the TI (temp indicator) (how do you spell caniption....?)

Ha Ha Ha! My Dad & my brother are both engineers. I recognize the caniption fit thing as something I gave my Dad quite a bit. My brother just shakes his head.
