Is the CGS oval foil ring supposed to be placed directly on top of the oval stone? I read that drip pans should be raised off stones to prevent scorching.

    yes directly on the oval stone. I can't find an oval or rectangular shaped pan that does not warp.  You really only need to use the foil ring on fatty Q cooks: brisket or butts.   It's a little tricky to use but best alternative I've found so far.
