Used BGE and lighter fluid

I have been thinking about picking up a used small or medium BGE to go with my large.  If looking at a used grill is it easily discernible whether lighter fluid had ever been used to start the grill?  Is there a distinct lighter fluid smell or does it only appear after the BGE is fired-up?
Mama always said, Grilling was like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you're gonna get.
