A fellow Egger told me he used lighter fluid???

A buddy of mine at work has a LG Egg, as do I, he told me the other day that he has experienced, as of late, a chemical type metallic taste in his food.  I probed a bit further, he told me he used freaking LIGHTER FLUID a fe months ago to light his charcoal!
Question: Is he screwed, or is there something that can be done about it(besides time passing by)?  Thanks guys.

  • Man, I dunno. It should get out of there at some point I would think. Might need to run a few loads of lump with not food over a week or so and see if he can get it to burn off/evaporate

It's more of a problem with the egg over regular charcoal grills because the ceramic is somewhat porous and you generally relight the lump if you have any left.

I just don't understand this. Lighter fluid isn't even that effective of a firestarter compared to the weber cubes, an oil soaked paper towel, or a chimney. I think people just like the "woosh" factor.

The problem may be related to excessive testosterone concentration.  That hormone that makes men ignore product literature.  He probably never cracked the operation manual and saw the section that said "Never use lighter fluid to start the charcoal".  I'm guilty of it myself, but mostly when assembling tool stands and stuff like that, then have to halfway disassemble and turn something around.  I did read the egg manual, however.

Dude, I had my egg for 8 years before signing up on this forum. There are many on here who wished I had it 8 more before signing up but I can't help them with that  B-)

Myron Mixon uses lighter fluid, and he has a pretty amusing rant about its taboos in his book Smokin'.
Seriously, pour a small pool of lighter fluid in your driveway.  Come back later, there's nothing left.  Its all volatiles, even if you DON'T light it!  Nothing wrong with using it.

It is volatile.  Problem is, charcoal absorbs volatiles.  Really, really well (water filters, air filters, etc)  And as it heats up before burning, it releases it's absorbed volatiles.  As it leaks out with the heat, on a lump that near but not on fire, those fumes are petroleum hydrocarbons and they're condensing on your food.  Egg cooking, you don't necessarily start every coal like you do with a briquette charcoal grill.  You usually have lumps that are queued up to burn, but until they do, they're just cooking like everything else.  So if this guy is talking about kamado grills, he's just wrong.  I'd cut him some slack if he's talking about traditional BBQ where you ash everything before cooking.

Not in the smokers but I will use it sometimes in my weber kettles if doing picnic food. The smell just brings me back to the backyard cookouts when I was a kid. Still use it on park cookouts.

my wife likes the smell of it.  always says "i love the way it smells.  someone's having a real cookout!"  after my grumbling she says "oh yeah, it tastes horrible.  sure.  i just like the smell of it"

i love the smell of gasoline too.  i just can't imagine drinking it.
