when i bought my thermopen, i also bought a rt304 for $19.00. It takes about 3 seconds longer to stabilize than the thermopen. Ironically, once stablized, they read exactly the same temps in ice water, and at boiling! Kind of impressed with both, but the thermapen still rules
If you don't want to splurge on a thermapen, Thermoworks, sells the RT600C for $19. I used one for a year before I bought a thermapen and it is an excellent thermometer for the price. I think it's an awesome value for the $.
That thing looks pretty nice for $18 bucks, and it has flames on it!
:)) too funny. It also has LED's that light within 30 degrees. Blue is under temp, green is at, and red is over. I suppose they are there if you can't read :) Also has a nice blue backlight. Great for the price.
XL BGE - Small BGE - A bunch of Webers - A bunch of accessories - Ceramic Grill Works 2-Tier
i did use it this past weekend on some salmon i made and i never checked the temp of salmon before. worked fine and came to temp quickly. i will use it this weekend when i make filets and that will be a better metric imo.
I think my buddy I talked into buying an XL (and loves it!) is picking one up as well. If it craps out on me, it's only $18. It seems to be pretty well built and has a rubbery grip. Not dishwasher safe though but no biggie. I just wipe down the probe and put it away.

picked this up at lowes today tested it in boiling water only off by 2 tenths of a degree not bad for 17.98 by far not a thermopen but it does have flames .

I am on my phone, but give me a minute for a link. America's Test Kitchen did an independent testing of several instant thermometers. Thermapen was the best, but the second best only run for $20.
Although this bulb-shaped thermometer felt awkward and cheaply made, and testers found it was too easy to hit the small buttons accidentally while gripping the head, it received top marks for speed, accuracy, and temperature range. An automatic shutoff preserved battery life.
An extra-thin probe that allowed for easy temperature checks, even inserted horizontally into chicken breasts, and relatively fast readout times put this model at the top of the rankings. We also liked the location of the readout screen at the side of the wand (as opposed to the end) and the simplicity of its controls. Its few drawbacks are a low maximum temperature, the fact that it can’t be calibrated (reset when accuracy seems off), and its lack of an automatic shutoff.
used mine this weekend on the filets and flank steak i made. definitely a keeper. registered the internal temp within 5 secs or so. so far so good for 29 bucks!
I recently got the Thermoworks RT600C pocket thermometer. Reads in 6 seconds or less and fit my budget much better than their Thermopen. Seems to work well.
