Worst Lump so far... (pics)
I've been an Egger for a little ove a year and always enjoy trying new lump. So far, Wicked Good has been the only lump to distinguish itself. On the flip side, I just tried a bag of "Best of the West Mesquite Charcoal" from a local grocery store. I've never seen lump spark with so much intensity. Embers were shooting out of the Egg (see pic #2) like fireworks. My dogs even had to take cover. The price and the quality of the lump wasn't bad, but the bag was filled with a tremendous amount of charcoal dust. Just a pretty poor product that you guys should stay away from.

Good heads up. I havent used WG but, Central Market lump has been very impressive in my use. Large chunks, little dust, burns great and only $12xx for 20lbs.
Be careful, man! I've got a beverage here. -
@ OLD NORTH STATE BBQ CO. -I have used and think very highly of Wicked Good Weekend Warrior-by chance have you any run-time with Ozark Oak...that's next on my experiment plate but I have to do a big buy to justify the freight.
And thanks for the heads up on Best of the West.

@Mickey uses Ozark Oak all the time. He seems to really like it.Be careful, man! I've got a beverage here.

I think when you find a lump you like, you stick with it and don't go testing around. I like RO and the price is right, so I'm not interested in other options.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious

I like Royal Oak too but the lump size seems to be getting smaller and smaller.

I agree, RO does seem to be getting smaller.Be careful, man! I've got a beverage here.

I tend to agree with this. I do think it is worth experimenting with a few different ones to see what you get for the $ before locking in on one.RO is quite a bit cheaper but seems to burn a bit faster than the bag of Humphreys I bought. But for $10 for a 17.6 lb. bag vs $38 for a 40 lb. bag the RO is a better value for me.Sarasota, FL via Boynton Beach, FL, via Sarasota, FL, via Charleston, SC, via The Outer Banks, via God's Country (East TN on Ft. Holy Cow!!! That's all i use and I have never had sparks like that. I buy the 40 lb bags and the pieces are huge with very little shake . That is bizarre. I've been using it for over a year now and love it. StrangeKeepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

Thanks Mickey on the Ozark Oak endorsement and I agree with SandBilly and Travis regarding Royal Oak and the piece size. Most of the bags these days I'm lucky to find more than a few pieces bigger than 1.5" by 1.5"-okay for the high temp cooks but most of my BGE adventures are low& slow, although haven't lost a fire (now jinxed) yet.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. I don't light with a weed burner but I've still never seen anything like that even when it gets super hot.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX -

If I could get it cheaper I would probably use it as well. I don't have the room to get a pallet and even though their shipping prices are pretty reasonable it still comes out to almost $1 per pound. I'm not saying I'll never order it again because it does last a bit longer than RO.Sarasota, FL via Boynton Beach, FL, via Sarasota, FL, via Charleston, SC, via The Outer Banks, via God's Country (East TN on Ft. That's not lump, that's a bag of firecrackers.

Guys that is NOT OZARK OAK in the picture. I will not say what it is but it is not Ozark Oak. I posted that picture a few years ago on the other forum and got a call from the mfg the next morning.I had 6 bags in my garage and they flew in 6 replacement bags (that cost a few bucks). Outstanding customer service. Seems a shipment of industrial lump/coal something got mixed up and some was bagged in their bags.Holy Cow!!! That's all i use and I have never had sparks like that. I bought some Best of the West mesquite lump and found it is best used on top of other brand lump if I want to add some mesquite flavor to my food.
It is just too much by itself.
Almost forgot, it was buy one get one free at the time. -

Well the bag he had said 6.6 lbs. Maybe the pieces for the 40 lb bag won't fit in the 6.6 lb bag? :-?Sarasota, FL via Boynton Beach, FL, via Sarasota, FL, via Charleston, SC, via The Outer Banks, via God's Country (East TN on Ft. Loudon Lake) -

I've heard that too. I don't notice a difference but I've used Mesquite (like Travis, I used the Central market lump and it's 100% mesquite) for years off and on so maybe I'm not sensitive to it.

Don't know if you ever make it to Maryland, but Watsons gardens center in Towson on York Road carries it. They are also a fully stocked BGE dealer. -

Wow it looks like 4th of July.
-
Great..I just picked up two 40lb bags of Best of the West last weekend at Sams and have it loaded in the Egg now. Hope mine turns out a little better than the pics here. I normally use Royal Oak but wanted to try something new.
-
I have probably burned 800 lbs of it in the last year and have never seen anything like that. I would never use it again if it acted that way. I wonder if it got wet somehow or something like that. This is what Sysco sells to all their restaurants too so If it were that crazy, I'm sure they would get a lot of complaints. That looks and sounds awful but that has not nearly been my experience with it.Keepin' It Weird in The ATX FBTX

You're only supposed to use that stuff on the 4th of July!

Ozark Oak is awesome. It's what my dealer carries. It's spendy but it's great quality. So is WG but at $1 per lb it's a bit boutique-y for me. I go through a lot of lump (70-80 lb on a lot of months) so I go for the cheaper stuff when I can find it.@ OLD NORTH STATE BBQ CO. -I have used and think very highly of Wicked Good Weekend Warrior-by chance have you any run-time with Ozark Oak...that's next on my experiment plate but I have to do a big buy to justify the freight.
