Thermapen off by 1.2 degrees

Folks,

Was making some pasta tonight and decided to show my brother how awesome and accurate my Thermapen is....or thought it was!

See below. We are off by 1.2 degrees. Any remedies.

    I assume you're measuring boiling water and it was off 1.2 degrees... there was no pic posted...
    where are you located?  What's your altitute and/or pressure?  Also salt and/or oil can affect the boiling point of water...
    Here is a calculator for altitude...

    I did have a good bit of salt in the pot.

    As soon as any of the salt dissolves in the water, the boiling point of the water will begin to rise -- by about one half degree Celsius for every 58 grams of salt dissolved per kilogram of water. In fact, any non-volatile soluble substance will raise the boiling point of water. That is why antifreeze (ethylene glycol) provides boiling protection in winter as it simultaneously provides freezing protection in the summer.

    Matters to some, not to others. Not a big deal but we did pay around 90 bucks for a precision temp tool... Yep matters to me.

    was there a high or low pressure system in the area? what was the atmospheric pressure in mB or mPa at the time you noted the discrepancy? and did you take the temperature in an insulated flask while vigorously stirring the water? :)

    in other words, even in boiling water, or ice water, just moving the thing around will cause the thermomter to read different temps.

    no way to know if it is truly 'off' without worrying about a bunch of other factors that really don't make much difference in the end

    Plus the accuracy is +/- 0.7 degrees anyway...

    The real benefit is the speed it takes a measurement... plus its nice, big, and easy to read/hold, and makes small holes if you barely puncture with just the end...
