Grate temp vs dome temp

I just started my first brisket this morning and the dome temp is reading 254. I have placed a digital thermometer on the grate and its reading 221, which temp should I go by?
Also if you get your temp to high what is the best way to lower the temp?

That is perfectly normal. When cooking indirect the dome will read higher for a while. Good luck with your brisket. Your temp is perfectGeaux Tigers!!!

I did my first brisket at 235* grate using my Stoker yesterday and it turned out great - the dome read 250*-260* most of the cook.
