A lot of owners say they don't even need a gasket. I replaced mine with the High-que self adhesive nomex. Once installed, I had to loosen the retaining ring on the lid to let the lid level itself. It has worked great and has not scorched at all. I recently made pizza, and while momentarily distracted let the dome temp hit 700+, (no pies were harmed). A small section of adhesive on the lower body at the back of the egg got soft and moved when the lid was opened and closed. I just pushed it back, closed the egg, and it seems ok now. The edge of the egg got so hot that the top retaining ring actually got loose, then tightened back when it cooled! The gasket remained un-scorched. I bought both the gasket and fire grate from High-que, I like both very much.

I like the Rutland.  I have them on all four of my eggs and have yet to cook one, even during cleaning burns at 800*+.  On the last two eggs I bought I scraped off the factory gasket and installed Rutlands before they were cooked on.  Many have success with no gasket, but I like the thought of a cushion there if the handle slips out of your hand.

High-que nomex. Self adhesive. Very easy install and it's held up great.

I didn't replace my gaskets for a couple of years or so after frying them, but finally decided that it was too hard to keep a constant temp for low and slow cooks (225-250º).  I bought some nomex from that guitar/BGE guy and put them on.  They were not self stick, but he sold a spray can glue that worked fine.

Since then, I've cooked a 20 hour brisket and kept the temp within one degree, and also done quite a few stir fries at super hot temperatures and the gaskets have held up well.

At this point, I'd recommend nomex without any reservations.

Fred the smoking guitar player is really cool. He cooks on his eggs at the.store every Saturday to demo them. He fed my dad and I lunch when we stopped in. That store is like porn to someone like me who plays guitar and loves to grill.
