BGE Fatal Error!

I am so bummed!  I made a fatal error with my BGE that I will never do again.

After waking up early this morning to put my first brisket on the BGE, I returned home from church and I realized that I hadn't inserted a thermometer into the brisket. -- I hesitated to open it because it was so nice and stable at about 240F.  Anyway, after about 4 hours of cooking, I opened the BGE and inserted the meat thermometer.  After doing so, the family and I left for day. 

Well, when I came back home after being gone for about 3 hours, the meat thermometer was chirping.  Not something I wanted to hear when I was expecting another 3 - 4 hours of cook time.  Apparently, when I opened up the BGE, the top air flow adjuster must have moved totally opened.  So, for about 3 more hours, my brisket cooked at 550 F! 

It was a hockey puck!

    Bummer.  Always orientate the screw for the swing out thingie on the DHMFT (whatever) to be right in front of you.  Then when you open the dome, it won't change it's setting.

    I had just the opposite.  I opened the lid and the top vent closed itself up.  Closed it up and obviously fire went out shortly afterwards.   Lesson learned.

    It happens to the best of us.  Had my stoker pit controller act up before too, fortunately I didn't step away for very long and caught it....

    Better luck next time.  The do-over will just taste that much better now!

    Jason, it is over, once you burn a brisket your cooking will be a disaster going forward - some sort of BGE tale (def. true though).  Please send your BGE to me (please pick up shipping cost), and be rid of this family curse forever.

    That's funny!

    I am going to conquer the brisket this weekend!  I failed twice on the traeger, but I am going to beat this thing with the BGE!
