Is mahi-mahi safe to eat?

Got a great couple fillets here for dinner, but on the way home had a nagging thought.  You know me, always with the over-analysis....  Anyway, I vaguely remembered a study or news article I read I think in 2011, about mahi-mahi fishing.  I can't for the life of me remember if the issue was that mahi-mahi was itself maybe unsafe for humans to eat, or that it might be harmful to fish for them in the first place, because of the bycatch.  I didn't read it in depth.

Anybody know if mahi-mahi is safe to eat, mercury-wise?  I'd hate to feed it to my wife and child, there are already enough dangers kids face these days.  ...or is it a matter of the way they are fished (bad in itself, but at least the food we have for dinner is ok).

Maybe I should just do some googling. but thought I'd ask here first.  BGEers have a depth of knowledge.  Amazing what they know.
Thanks in advance.

    LS: it was on sale...
    :\">

googling now.  doesn't seem unsafe as far as being tainted. i think it's more an issue that they are catching sharks, rays, and sea turtles while they are going after the mahi-mahi.

so, probably not a good thing to constantly indulge in, given the negative karma associated with killing the larger fauna.

    well.  just this once.

sometimes when we go after the little fish, we don't realize how much we could be upsetting the larger species.

    Found this is Wikipedia;

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) classifies mahi-mahi as a "moderate mercury" fish or shellfish (its second lowest of four categories), and suggests eating six servings or fewer per month

Never eat anything passed through a window unless you're a seagull ... BGE Lg.

When we go to Florida it is my favourite fish.  In St. Petersburg there is a place called Peters Smoked Fish and from eating there I can say Mahi Mahi smokes real nice.

  • Totally safe. I grew up in Florida, fished commercially, and worked in a fish market in college. Most of what you buy is known as "chicken dolphin". AKA small quasi juveniles that mass in great schools and are easily caught. If you were eating 60lb "bull dolphin" on a weekly basis, you may need to worry about mercury poisoning.

As for the way it is caught, if you knew, you would never eat any seafood ever again.

Safe for sure. Grill it up and make some nice mahi tacos. Sounds great.

I have caught and cooked countless dolphin/mahi-mahi/dorado, I can tell you it's not only safe but and extremely tasty fish regardless of how you prepare it.

My suggestion is to get you some blackening seasoning, Chef Prudehomes or other choice. Get a cast iron skillet on the egg, the closer to 500 you can get the skillet the better. Melt a little unsalted butter, brush on the fish, both sides, sprinkle all the blackened seasoning you can handle, gently place on the iron skillet, stand back and let the smoke clear, for about 2 minutes tops, get a good spachela, flip the fish, leave on for 2 more minutes, pull them off and serve, pardon the pun but you'll be hooked.

  • I spent a week on South Bimini. The locals would fight over Cuda. I've never eaten one but I would think if they eat them it cant be too bad.

down in abaco they have two rules for them, only eat the ones caught on the flats, and only eat the ones caught off shore in deep water.
ciguartera fish poisoning, one of my bonefish guides came down with it, said it was the worst case of food poisoning he ever had, lasted a week for the fun symptoms to pass, and another nine or so months for his joints to stop hurting, ill pass

Travis, Try their skirts. They are pretty solid and it is cool watching the fish strike them at night (skirts glow in dark). They have some pretty good videos on YouTube for a rainy day
