Intro - gasket replacement question

Very new to the forum...glad to be on board. I have lurked for a couple of months and gotten some great information. I was given an old small egg last year from a friend that was not being used. By old, I mean old hinge style...not spring assist band, and old style top also. I have used the egg a handful of times, and it becomes more pleasant every time.
Tonight I am installing a new top, a new spring assist band, and a new gasket which will make this thing as close to new as I can. Any tips on the gasket replacement? That is the only part of the update that I have any concerns with at this point.

Only one question: why replace gasket. Have 3 without gaskets and they work fine.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

My only comment is don't replace the gasket with another stock felt gasket. I made that mistake. My next one will be a Nomax or RutlandJackson, Tennessee. VFL (Vol for Life)

Good tips...I use fiberglass fire rope on my smoker to seal the chamber...did not think to use something similar on the egg.Love smoking chicken...but they are hard to keep lit ;-) http://daveyrayland.wordpress.com/ Small Egg / Weber OTG 22" / CharGriller Trio / Masterbuilt 30" Electric

I believe the High Heat gasket that is on the BGE website is a Nomex, and should be available from your dealer. Anybody else know if that's right or not?
-
When my gasket burned off my dealer only had the stock felt gasket. I contacted the Mothership in Atl. And had the nomex gasket delivered to my door in 3 days. I have had no problem with it, but I now cook my pizzas on a rig extender from CGS instead of the platesetter:)Nerk Ahia LBGE

I just replaced my gaskets with Nomex because I was bored. Now, I'm pissed because I can't do a high temp cook for awhile.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious

what's under your daisy wheel?

VI - why not? My only problem was with the original grey ones. No issues with nomex and Super 77.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

what's under your daisy wheel?
The top picture was the egg as I received it with the old hinge and an old daisy wheel that was off a medium. It caused condensation and runoff of whatever I had been cooking. Last cook was smoking a pastrami. The second pic shows the egg all cleaned up with it's new gasket, new small size daisy wheel, and new spring assist band.Love smoking chicken...but they are hard to keep lit ;-) http://daveyrayland.wordpress.com/ Small Egg / Weber OTG 22" / CharGriller Trio / Masterbuilt 30" Electric -
Suck it up and invest in the nomex gaskets. I took other eggers advice and did the same. My egg is much happier now, and showing few signs of deterroriation. The egg is designed with a factory gasket (which happens to suck balls), but does serve a purpose Spend a few extra bucks and get a nice one that will last. You won't regret it.

Nice job. I would love to come across a used small and refurbish it like you have.
When that crappy felt gasket burns out get you a Nomax and don't look back.

I will now be on a mission...starting tonight...to burn the crap felt gasket out and switch to Nomex ASAP. Got a great email this morning letting me know that my 12" pizza stone and pizza peel were shipping and will arrive Friday. Looks like a weekend of Egging!Love smoking chicken...but they are hard to keep lit ;-) http://daveyrayland.wordpress.com/ Small Egg / Weber OTG 22" / CharGriller Trio / Masterbuilt 30" Electric
