I have no problems with Cowboy (Lowe's carries that brand). I bought it when WW was out of Royal Oak.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious

Do you find that Cowboy burns up faster?

@Billyray. I didn't make a study of it. All in all, I guess I've burned about 6 or 8 bags, off and on, and hadn't noticed a big difference. Most of my cooks are relatively short (less than2 hours .... steaks, chicken, stir fry, etc) so I don't usually test the longevity of the lump.I'm sure I'd notice something if I did an overnighter with it, but I haven't done that.__________________________________________Dripping Springs, Texas.Just west of Austintatious

I use cowboy for nearly all my cooks. I really love it for searing chicken, steaks, tri tip and other cooks that need some high heat. It will max out the temp gauge on the egg if you let it run. I have used it for slow cooking, but I find that the egg needs to be filled to the top of the fire ring. I did a 14 hour cook on a picnic roast a few weeks ago, and the cowboy lasted the whole time at 250 to 300 and still had nearly a third leftover. It's cheap, easily available, and works for me, so I like it.

Cowboy burns up significantly faster the RO. I only use it when I can't get access to RO at a reasonable price.
-
I picked up my first few bags of RO today. I have always used BGE lump and could not get any this time. I am hoping RO will be similar since I have read that it is (and purchased 40lbs of it!).
My brother uses Cowboy and loves it.

Chubbs- RO makes BGE lump.

Cowboy burns really hot and very fast. Definitely don't reccomend it for long slow cooks.

Used cowboy for the first time last night. There was a huge disparity in the size of pieces. Some were gigantic and there was also a ton of tiny/unusable pieces and dust. It did seem to burn quickly, but I assume that was because I was doing pizza.

It's less dense, so by volume it looks like it burns faster. But pound for pound it pretty much burns the same
Less dense is good for faster starting or getting quick to sear temps.
Different lumps have different virtues. I dont worry too much about what's in the bag. It all burnsed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante -
On a long cook, sprinkle a some cowboy in the bottom of a clean egg . Carefully build your fire withe the Wicked Good. The cowboy acts as kindling to the WG, and will ignite a very nice well rounded pit. You won't be disappointed. There is absolutely nothing wrong with mixing charcoals. Find what works best for you, and evolve that method so you can teach another egger.

RO is $14.99 in Canadian tire for 20 lbs. That's a excellent price for lump.
-
I got a 20 lb. bag of Cowboy for $17.99 in Council Bluffs, Ia. Didn't think that was too bad as other 20 lb. bags were 20.99 or higher. .................just sayin
I have used CB lots with no problems and its cheap!
Only 3 things in life matter. Family, Steelers and my BGE!! -
Correction , the RO bag was only 17.6 lbs.Still $15 is the cheepest lump in Canada.
-
I used Cowboy for first time on an overnight cook Friday/Saturday. I was impressed with the size of the pieces of lump. The lump sizes were consistent in size- more so than with my bags of BGE and RO. Maybe I grabbed a good bag. It was, however, a dollar two higher than RO. I read Cowboy burns quickly, but I ran my Egg 18 hours straight with no issue and I was not filled to top of fire ring. So far so good with Cowboy.Columbia, SC --- LBGE 2011 -- MINI BGE 2013

I've been using CB for about 2 years now and I have not had any problems doing low and slow cooks. Maybe it's just me but I've tried RO a couple of times and it seems like it does not last as long.
