Yep, pulled the trigger on a small brother to my large egg.
The large is necessary for the "company" cooks but seemed like
overkill when doing burgers, etc. for the two of us and I've gotten lazy about
rearranging everything to do a small cook on the large. If that sounds like
rationalization...I'll cop to it.

My wife actually was part of the process and encouraged me to buy it. She
recently had hip surgery and I think that the pain killers she was taking were
working in my favor. Well, that and her basic good nature.

What was odd was that the sales guy tried to talk me out of buying a small.
"Too hard to get up to temperature" and "Doesn't hold the heat
well, what you really want is a large".

OK, he's trying to upgrade me so I told him that I already had a large and
wanted a small to go with it. His response was "If you're used to a large
you really won't like the small, takes much longer to heat up".

The owner of the store was standing about 15 feet away while this is going on
and I kept glancing over at him to see if he is going to shut this guy up, but
no action on his part. Finally I was able to force the sales(?) guy to sell me
the small, but it wasn't easy! Today the delivery guy said that he was being
laid off because sales where down. Gee, really?

Tonight we're going to dirty that puppy up and do those burgers.

My Mexican neighbor who helped me move things around (got rid of the gasser)
approved: "one for the tortillas and one for the meat"

I have a XL and my Dad has a medium.  I've cooked on his many times and to me his heats up a little faster than mine so I don't see why anybody would say a small takes longer to heat up than a large.

Gezr, I have had a small for over two years and I have never had the problems the salesman talked about.  I have t-rex'd beef, baked pies and biscuits done low and slow ribs and roast....the small is just a work horse. Once the temp is stable I usually never have to worry with it.  Geez, I wonder why their sales were off? (sarcasm off)

I added a Small to my Large last summer too, and have never regretted it.

I'm glad that I went in to the store knowing what I wanted. That night I did burgers and there were no surprises, the small heated up just fine, had room on the grill for 4 patties, 4 strips of bacon and 3 ears of corn...perfect.
A great partner for the large!

With just my wife and I at home the small gets called on for 90% of our grilling.  I did have some trouble reaching 600* + searing temps, but the addition of a High-Q grate solved that.  IMO the lower vent on the small needs to be bigger to increase air flow.  That would solve the problems with reaching high temps.
